The LC 575 mobo I bought off ebay finally arrive yesterday...so it's MYSTICIFICATION TIME! I've got my CC running OS 7.6 with 4MB of RAM and a 80MB hard drive right now, but I'm about to yank that dirty little mobo and toss in the 575's with 20MB of RAM, a 25MHz full '040 and the biggest hard drive I can find around here. Oh yeah, a brand new LC PDS ethernet card, too!

SUCCESS! The Color Classic is now booting in OS 8.0! Only problem is I don;t have the right size Torx screwdriver so I can;t swap out the hard drive yet...80MB will have to be enough for now. I'm installing AppleTalk so I can mount the CC's hard drive on my TiBook and start moving software over to it...

Congrats... one of these days, I've got to do mine (have all the parts, just no time). Am I correct in assuming that you did the ResEdit patch to let the 8.0 know how to boot a Mystic with the original size screen?

Okay, this is wacky. I put the 1.9GB drive in an external case and attached it to my 840av so I could wipe it clean and install 8.1 along with the ResEdit hack on it. I then spent forever trying to get the 80MB drive out of the CC and the 1.9GB in, cutting my finger in the process

I then try to boot the CC up, I get a blinken question mark. I put the 210MB drive I was using for the Plus back in the external case, having made sure it's set to a different SCSI ID than the 1.9GB that's now inside the CC, connect it to the 840av, and install 8.1 with the ResEdit hack on it. I then connect the external 210MB to the CC and boot up, it works fine. The 1.9GB drive inside the CC does not mount. I run HDT and it doesn't show up. WTF???!

Anyway, the CC is working fine with the external 210MB fo now, and it's running at 560x384 at 16-bit color like a dream! The little screen looks so sharp and clear! I played Wolfenstein 3D and fired up Netscape 4.7 to surf a bit. So far, it seems noticeably faster at games and web browsing than my Duo 280c did. Now if I could only get the damned 1.9GB internal drive working...

Oh yeah, I definitely need more memory. 20MB aint cutting it, I can;t even load Sound Manager in 8.1 with all the other extentions I have. I'd like to get a 64MB 72-pin SIMM and have 68MB, but I'll leave that up to ebay.

It's not something to do with HFS+ is it? I know if you are running 8 or 8.1 you should be able to boot of an HFS+ drive but it sounds like similar symptoms.

There wasn't something about HFS+ booting on PPC macs was there???

A 68k can't boot from a HFS+ regardless, but a 68k can mount and use a HFS+ drive as long as it's running 8.1. This is different, the drive isn;t seen at all. I'm going to take the CC apart again (grrr!) and see if mayble a SCSI cable or something came loose...

Any chance that the SCSI ID on that 1.9 GB is broken?? I've got an old 4 GB SCSI drive from a garage sale that is stuck on ID = 0 regardless of how I set the jumpers. Apple's Drive Setup or some other SCSI utility should tell you what ID the drive is really set to. Also, any chance that it is a termination problem??

Good luck,

You only neeg to format it HFS+ if the drive is bigger then 2GB so i don't think there will be a problem here, any chance on a ppc mystic or maybe even a G4 CC

Another possible source of trouble could be SCSI Manager 4.3, which was introduced with the 840AV. Although it looks like SCSI Manager 4.3 can handle older SCSI Manager stuff, its not clear if an older machine can handle an HD initialized under SCSI manager 4.3. Sadly, I have no idea how to prove that this is the problem or what to do to fix it.

I'm confused... you mean 8.0 will directly support a Mystic without any screen mod?

Wow...

Undoubtedly you have a scsi id or other jumper misconfigured on the 1.9 gig...
