Hi there people,
I am faced with a dilemma...
I can either buy an LC575, or a Color Classic,
I have not much space for both, at the moment
anyways (student at uni accomodation :/).
I wanted to play MP3's on either if possible.
Also I wanted to put a few mods in, maybe
an AV card or a network card if possible.
Which one is better? as in, looks better,
sounds better with music, and has more modding
capability.

Thanks :)

The Color Classic looks better, is more compact, and is something of a collector's item. Other than that, however, the LC575 is a much better machine--in fact, the way one modifies a CC (if one does not make it into a PowerPC machine) is by stuffing as much of the 575's components in as possible, and then modifying certain other internal CC components to mimic those of the 575.

Anyway, the benefits of the 575 are:

Has a 68040 CPU (as opposed to the CC's 68030) -- double the clock speed, a much faster chip even at the same clock speed, and the only 68k chip capable of playing mp3s. The 575 actually comes with a 68LC040 CPU (lacks a floating point unit). I would recommend upgrading it to a full 68040. The chip is socketed -- just pull out the motherboard, pry off the chip and stick in a replacement chip (obtained off of eBay, or maybe from someone in these forums).

Has stereo sound capability with the built-in speakers -- the CC will drive external stereo speakers (AFAIK), but it has only one internal speaker.

Can take up to 36, or even 68, MB of RAM -- CC can take only 10.

Has a larger monitor -- not only easier on the eyes, but capable of higher resolution; CC's 512x384 is less than the "modern" minimum of 640x480 that some apps require in order to run.

All that said, AFAIK there's only one 68k-capable mp3 player (it's mentioned in these forums sometimes--I think it's called mpegdec), and you're limited to 22KHz/8bit output (as opposed to the standard, "full fidelity" 44k/16bit).

Yes, the 575 is a nice machine. Lots of modifications for it, too.

Yeah, but at least its in stereo! '030 Macs, such as the Colour Classic can only do mono sound, unless you upgrade the mobo to an LC575 mobo. Personally, i'd say get the 575. It doesn't command much more space than the Colour Classic, but it looks sexy, and is much more powerful. Granted, Colour Classics are cool, but if at the end of the day, all you want is a machine that works without modifications, then the 575 is for you. However, both are alright for modding, and you can find instructions online for upgrading a Colour Classic to accept PowerPC motherboards. You can find the same information for LC575s too, but the information is harder to find. Its probably a pretty similar operation though. Just be careful of the CRT while you are poking around in there.

Oh yeah, one other good thing about the 575 is that it has an internal CD ROM drive, whereas the CC doesn't.
