Gothikon-That is a really nice Performa 638CD. I enjoy making Video CD's too. I obtained my Performa 638CD and a Performa 636CD from a thrift store for $10.Original Macintosh owner |

Very nice! Man i really need to start saving up for a nice 40 gigger for my LC630, or maybe even get an 80 gigger, put that in the iMac, and then move the iMac's "old" 40 gigger over to the LC. Either way, its going to be sweet. Hi all, this forum has helped me get up to speed on what can be done with a Performa 630CD. I got it from my girlfriend's father. It came with:-36mb RAM -PDS ethernet -80 MB external SCSI drive (this thing is the size of a large encyclopedia volume!) -250 mb hard drive -All the original manuals/discs (even the disc folder!) I want to upgrade it soooo. . . Found a bunch of stuff for $50 bucks on ebay: -68040 w/ FPU -Comm Slot I Ethernet -TV/Video System -Presentation System -OS 7.6 CD My question is about RAM. I have seen that some stores have a 128mb 72pin SIMM for the Performa. Has anyone tried one of these? Do they work? Also, I have seen stuff for the PDS slot like a processor upgrade. When I go on the sonnet site they list the Presto 040 and the Presto Plus. Both say that it is compatible with the Performa 600. Is this the 600 series or JUST the Performa 600? Any info is greatly appreciated!

Those Presto upgrades are just for the Performa 600. Those are based on the IIvx/IIvi mobo, which is completely different to the 630 series mobo."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Apart from the '040, there are the following CPU upgrades for it: Performa x2xx/x3xx (except 6360) logic board: No modifications are required to use this, but seeing as th ough these boards had a few problems, and won't give you any speed increase, they're not reccommended. Performa 5400/6400/6360 logic board: These are nice, as they are based on a newer PCI architecture, and are quite easy to find, but they require that you install a 3.3v regulator into the 630, which requires a good understanding of electronics and nerves of steel. However, they do work fine, and give you modern computing abilities like the ability to run OS 9, have up to 128 megs of RAM, and to be able to install a decent graphics accelerator (Rage 128 comes to mind) or a USB/Firewire card, as well as a G3 upgrade. PowerMac 5500/6500 mobo: Very highly reccommended. These have all the advantages of the x400s, but they are more modern, even faster, and do not require a 3.3v regulator to run at all, unless you want to go G3 or install PCI expansion cards. If you really want a good processor upgrade, this is the way to go. thank you so much for the information maclovr. I will look into the upgrades. The same source I got the performa from wants to dump a beige g3 on me. I think I will upgrade the Performa as much as possible with the native board, and then see what I can to to the g3 (but thats [probably another forum/website alltogether!).SO you mentioned the 128mb of RAM with the new boards, but I have seen 128 72pin SIMMS made for performas for $50-$70. Do these work with the native board? Also, the TV/FM system is not for the 630CD right? Just the TV tuner? thanks again for all of the knowldege passed on, I have never had a mac, and suddenly I got 2 for free! How lucky can one person be? Hope everyone has a good weekend!

About the RAM, you MAY be able to use the 128 meg SIMMs on the new board. I've heard of it being done on an LC475, and i've also heard of someone installing a 64 megger into a 630 and having it work fine, but not a 128 in a 630. If you've got an LC475 or something you can use it on if it doesn't work though, you can give it a go. Also, I believe that the TV/FM system should work fine. However, if you get a TV or TV/FM card, you'll also need the Apple Video System, which goes into the Video slot on your mobo. Either way, enjoy your new system. It's very advanced compared to PCs of the same era! I found the apple tv/video system on ebay. I really wanted the tv/fm tuner, but at the time, I was not sure if it would be compatible with the performa. But I just got the TV/Video system in its original box w/ all the goods inside. . . got the 68040, Apple Tv/Video Sys, Apple Presentation Sys, os 7.6 full (all the discs/floppies etc), And a comm slot ethernet card for about $50. . .shipping and handling bought it closer to $65. It seems there were a lot of tv/video systems for sale. . .most starting between $5-$10 depending on condition/stuff included. Can't wait to try it out!about that 64080 I got on ebay. . .I do notice better performance, but is there any utility that can tell if the processor is indeed a 68040? I guess I could download a prog that only runs w/a FPU or 68040. . . I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. |
