I have recently maxed out my LC630. Try and see if you can beat it. The current specs are:33 Mhz full '040 52 megs of RAM 6 gig HD AppleCD 1200i (8x internal CD ROM) External 6x TEAC CD-R burner DOS card with 8 meg 72 pin SIMM Apple CS1 10BaseT RJ-45 ethernet card Apple Video System, connected to Panasonic VCR, model SD250 Apple Presentation System, is carried around with system when going places 14" Macintosh Colour Display, doesn't display red....goddamn the PAF for not letting me get a new monitor! Mac OS 8.1 Windows 95 Da Rules: The machine you list must be one of the following: Any Macintosh LC/Performa/Quadra 63x series, including the DOS Compatibles Any LC/Performa 580 or 588 Any "Takkyfied" Colour Classics with 630 series boards PowerPC upgrade cards are allowed, but if you swapped in a PowerPC Performa mobo, your Mac is no longer a 630, and is no longer qualified to compete But yeah. Can't. That requires guts y'see, something i don't have. Btw, an amendment to the rules. PPC Performas that have had their logic boards replaced with 630 or 580 series boards are also eligable. For example, if you find a poor, lonely Performa 5200 abandoned on the side of the road, and you find the only problem it has is a fried mobo, and you replace it with a 630 mobo, that counts, as the machine now goes under the name Performa 580. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance. - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6 Edit - rules, not fules. alright, you asked for it... i had an LC 580 that had 40meg of RAM in it and a 500MB HD and a full 040 processor swaped into it. Big whoop you say? I haven't finished yet. I had 8.1 installed on it and almost every aspect of the operating system and most applications had been edited to my personal liking which consisted of just some personal arrangement of things, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all over the place... I was obsessed then... had over 200 images of them then and to think if I were still infatuated with them, I may have thousands.... creepy eh?________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

you know, it was ok back then... 2 or 3 years ago.... they an I share the same age, but it seems like it's hard for people to picture them out of the 5 yr old stage. They are quite attractive now days, but I've got me a real and tangible girl, so who needs to be obsessed over stars that you're likely never to meet? ________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com

Wes is dead, and I'm still obsessed with his music. If you haven't heard him yet, pick up Smoking at the Half Note, Incredible Jazz Guitar, or Full House RIGHT NOW! That is some of the most sophisticated yet melodic music that I've ever heard, in the same league as Hindemith's works for horn. What's the point in meeting a star when you won't have anything to talk to them about? I met Pat Metheny (one of my idols) a couple weeks ago, and we chatted quite a bit. Nice guy, really. He said he doesn't think about soloing any more than he thinks about nouns, verbs, and adjectives when he's conversing. Scary. BTW, Wes is Wes Montgomery, if you're completely ignorant and un-cultured. hey! it was cool while it lasted! the 6400 board was fine and im actually using it in its case now... the monitor and top of the case on the other hand... well... lets just say they had a traumatic experience. Anyway, I'm doing something similar with my Q700 now, just not involving the Olsen twins or any stars of any kind. just a customization thing... haven't done any mods in a while and I miss it. and OldMacMan, when i said the thing about being obsessed with stars.... i meant, well, sort of having little fantasies of meeting them and hangin with em, marryin them and other wierd stuff like that... anyway... ________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

well, the only thing my 636 has over yours is that you didn't max out the ram. Why only 52MB? I have 64 and I've heard it can take even more. I also have the TV/video system, which like your video system can connect to a vcr, but I can also watch TV with an antenna hooked up.mathgeek 68K Macs Liberated: LC, Performa 636, Mac Classic II My Powerbook 1400 page http://www.its.caltech.edu/~dgoulet/1400 |

here's mine. not as good as some of yours, but it impresses my PC friends when i mention it's 8 yrs old:Performa 630 33mhz 68040 68 MB Ram 250 MB SCSI HD (the IDE one died... i should be getting an 800 Meg IDE soon though) as soon as the SCSI isnt being used by a hard drive, my 300i CD-Rom Drive will go in there i have the TV/Video system, hooked up to my digital cable Etherwave PDS Ethernet Card (basically ethernet in/out) also, an AppleVision 1710AV running at 800x600 Currently serving web, ftp, email, running AIM, and being my only TV future plans... bigger hard drive, comm slot ethernet, some kind of pds card (sound? processor upgrade? DOS card? MPEG System? whatever i can find) maybe a TV/FM tuner -- Performa 630 LCIII SE |

Depends. If you want to do a lot of sound stuff on it, you might find a PAS 16 sound card handy. I'm quite happy with the onboard sound, though. If you want to play MPEG movies on your Mac, you'll need an MPEG card to accellerate the process. Likewise, if you want to check out some of the old DOS games, you'll find a DOS Compatible mobo indispensible. However, this is one upgrade where you will need to do a full-out mobo swap with a DOS Compatible logic board, which has a daughtercard containing the Mac's '040 chip and the PC stuff, unless you can find someone willing to just sell you the DOS component from their mobo. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance. - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

I got one but I haven't had time to try it out yet, I did test the MPEG Video System yesterday tho. I played three of the VCD's included in the package and I was VERY dissapointed with the performance. Nobody does anything with VCD's anymore anyway, but I was hoping for better from a hardware decoder, especially at such low resolutions. The card looks to be useful as a TeleConferencing or mpegdec kind of audio soultion if a way can be found to make an MPEG1 data stream from a modem, RAM-Disk, HDD or any other source look like it's coming from a CD drive tho. jt

Hi, I picked up (rescued, i mean) an old LC630 for 10 !! & plan to bring back from the grave. Can anyone offer advice as to what i can upgrade on it? I've got a spare 4gig IDE HD from my iMac (rev b) - i believe the lc630 was the first IDE mac, will i be able to fit that 4gig drive? I've installed system 7 as it wouldnt accept my 8.6 or 9.1 discs - is this a firmware issue, what do i need to do to get one of theses systems on the LC? Is a processor upgrade possible? where should i look for one? Finally, I'd like to get it internet savvey, i've got an old external v.90 56k modem - there is no modem in the LC, but there is some sort of round telephone connection port - what should i do? Prehaps a network card would be best - then i could have fun networking it to my imac? I'm really not sure, I am very unfamiliar with this older technology. Don't laugh, but i'm also not sure how to get the case off the damn thing! Hope you can help - thanks Riquez **UPDATE** OK, so i had a tinker about anyway & got the case open. The HD comes out really easy, but it doesnt like my imac's IDE. It does have OS X on though!! My system 7.5.3 installer is from apple downloads, so its not a boot disc, how can i make a boot disc so i can boot from that & wipe the 4gig IDE drive? **UPDATE** Edited by - riquez on 21 Jun 2003 08:11:53 |

Thanks guys.I hooked up an external frog drive to boot from, & added the 4gig drive to the LC630 - but then the system complains "Large volumes over 4gig are not supported by this system" Sooo, I need OS 8.1 right? Is OS 8.1 avail to DL anywhere? Will it install with only 8Mb ram & the standard LC630 processor? (I will add more ram later) I know nothing about 040 & FPU - what does it all mean? I am a child of the G3 generation :) Is there a internet store that you could recommend to get a new processor? Riquez

8.1 may be available illegally on hotline somewhere, but it's still a commercial product from Apple, AFAIK. If you can nab a CD cheaply somewhere (eBay, or the like) that'd be the way to go. You can probably get the bootable Disk Tools FDD image off the links on Gamba to test it in 8 MB of RAM. Partition the drive and stick with the OS you have for now would be my advice.jt . There's also a "Macintosh Processor upgrade" for your 630 that fits into your CPU slot and gives you a 50 Mhz PPC 601. And yes, x2xx and x3xx mobos will all fit in and work, apart from the 6360, which uses the same board as the 5400. 5500 and 6500 boards will also work, and regulate the required 3.3v by themselves, to a point. If you want to use PCI expansion cards or go G3, you'll need to add a 3.3v regulator to an x500 board. If not, it'll just slide in and work fine. Its in there, loaded with 7.6.1, so i can still use the machine while i await funding for a 20 or 40 gig HD for the machine.
