Seeing as though my PowerMac 8100's power supply has taken a crap, and the PAF forbids me from getting one off eBay, or accepting bigsadhu's offer, i have decided that if i want to use my AV card, i'll have to get another Mac, in the form of a Centris 650. Now i know that some people *ahem* FireWire have gotten 6100 DOS cards to work in their 650's, and FireWire tells me that it will work, but still, seeing as though its a card designed for the 601 PDS, and its a 68k Mac, i'm just a little bit skeptical as to whether it will work or not. It won't. The 8100 AV card is a true 601 PDS card. The 6100 DOS card, however, is an 040 PDS card mated to a 601-to-040 PDS adapter. <<<john>>>

why don't you look into adapting an ISA PSU? you could even transplant the mobo into a clone but that'd be a LOT of work!i've got the Radius 81/110 which is the same mobo, but with a real monitor port instead of that 45 pin monstrosity. do you need one of those ports to use the AV card and is it ever used for anything other than standard mac video? i've got a VideoVision Studio NuBus card i can stick in there, but it would be interesting to see if the apple AV card would work. i hooked up my Quadra 660AV today and it doesn't do video as well as the quadra 630! maybe it can capture video better, but for display, i can only get 256 colors out of it, the 630 did 16 bit color at 640x480! is the 840AV better at playing video thru than the 630 or is the specialized architecture and hardware better than the DSP and extra speed if you're just running DVD opr VHS thru to the monitor without doing any capture? jt  ™.

The AV card in my 7100/66 carries 2MB VRAM, a decent video connector and a pair of SHS (in & out) ports.As far as the 81/110 is concerned it will fit fine AFAIK, and give you dual monitor if it works like the Apple machines. You have to love HDI connectors. I just discovered the PB180c has a HDI-30 connector for SCSI not the standard 25-pin. Not only that but it also has a 'mini-15' video connector for the monitor - the same standard as FireWire but a few more pins if I'm not mistaken! --

Where does all of this 256 color stuff come from? Only 8-bit on a 660av? Huh? No way! 16-bit at 640x480, I guarantee you. Trust me on that. See my sig? I use it every day. There are no vram slots, so I'm not running a decked out rig. 65536 beautiful colors out of that baby straight out of the box.{ candyPunk }

256 colors on video capture passthru to the monitor is all it'll do and it still dropped frames, IIRC, i would hope it'll do its own video output a LOT better than that! but i was just trying to use it to run my old 20" monitor from my DVD player's S-video output using the 660AV VidCap capability.i switched to using the TV/Video system on the 5260 and get 16 bit color and no dropped frames at all. it looks kinda silly with the movie playing simultaneously on the 15" and 20" monitors on the rack, but i'll switch over to a 630 or the VideoVision or NuVista to make room for all the Stereo and Home Theatre equipment after i fab some more rackmount shelves, i only have two for now. http://homepage.mac.com/jwt1863/.Pictures/Shop/racksystem_00.jpg jt ™.

i think there's a PDS card that helps, but doesn't your 840AV do better than the 660AV? you should get much better results.jt ™.
