I think so, you need the right card though.

The 840AV has Video In and Video Out ports, right? So all you need is some device to act as a TV tuner. So if you have a TV or VCR with S-video or composite video out, you can run the signal thru the 840AV and have it show up on the monitor. I use a old app called Apple Video Recorder on my "8575G3" (a contraband Frankenmac with 8500 mobo and 250 MHz G3 inside a 7500 desktop case) to do this very thing. Its a fun way to make quicktime movies of TV shows, vacation videos, etc. Admittedly, I don't know if there is a 68k version or equivalent for this software.

Happy couch potatoing,

So What I want is a hack. I want a tv-tuner & then I want software to let my Quadra display the chanels.

I may buy a cheap vcr, but vcr's are crap Ive always hated them, why when we have cd's, do we have to bother with tape?

DVD is too expensive for me to consider at the mo.

Hmmmmmmm

I wanna have two monitors &use 1 to watch tv while I use the computer.

The Quadra can display any video feed from any source on screen at 640x480 right out of the box, even with the most minimal setup. However, it's not a TV tuner, so you can't actually connect a coaxial cable and change channels. Furthermore, finding a Nubus TV Tuner would be difficult, and may have ill-effect/conflict with the 840av's onboard DSP.

My suggestion would be to get an external cable box, the kind normally used either when a cable customer has an older TV set that doesn't support a large number of channels or just wants to be able to control the channel-changing differently. This would be the best solution, because most cable boxes today have RCA video and audio outputs, which you could connect to the Quadra.

don't buy anything, watch for a VCR with a broken tape mechanism in the rubbish or ask a couple of local appliance repair shops to save one for you when somebody wants to throw theirs away because it costs too much to repair it. VCR's are free for the taking all the time . . . as long as you don't need to use a tape in them!

p.s. make sure it has the RCA monitor/stereo connectors like cine' mentioned. that'd be the yellow/red/white plug sets like you have on the back of your 840AV if my guess is right.

True, most VCR's will work very well as a makeshift cable box, although unless they're very new, won't handle more than about 125 channels. Of course, unless you have digital cable or satellite, this won't matter, anyway.

My mouse pointer travels from the right hand monitor onto the left hand monitor. When I set the monitors, I can choose millions of colours & 800 * 600 @ 72 mhz for the compaq & 640 * 480 & 256 colours on the not so brilliant monitor, except that I am getting a millions of colours option for the less well endowed monitor.

I am now arguing with my son cos he wants the monitor back for the performa so's he can play Lemmings.

I have a scart lead which ass well as having 2 phono plugs also has a plug which'll fit in the stereo in on the back of my Quadra.

I am not keen on the "old video" idea just cos it has to cosmetically look good.

Yeh, having some crappy old black VCR glommed next to your spiffy 840AV setup would look ugly.

But I wonder about the hacking opportunities of stuffing VCR electronics (without the bulky tape mechanism) inside a spare LC pizzabox or IIci case (or better yet, cannibilize a contraband 6100 case). A cut-out around the floppy drive hole could hold the channel number display and another hole could hold the IR receiver for the remote. The whole thing would then sit aesthetically under one of the monitors. You could even daisy-chain the 120 AC from the 840AV to the VCR to the monitor so they all turn on with a simply press of the power-up button.

Happy channel (and web) surfing,

mount it all flat in one of those upside down clear plastic box picture frames and hang it on the wall right next to the workstation or mount it on a piece of electrical conduit as a post/pedestle kinda deal running to a center hole cover plate on an electrical box mounted to the desk with the PSU built into it. the low voltage and video I/O lines would be running up the conduit into the "display" case and the remote control would work right thru the clear plastic.

I made a mistake, the cable I have has, scart to phono, phono, and the bit that fits my quadra fits the out stereo video socket not the in. Still I shoul be able to work with the phono leads. No after a quick read of the box the phonos are only sound. I have another lead but my day is nearly over, my wife'll be back & I have to replace the video & tidy up. Next monday is my next opportunity to play cos I worek the weekends.

so I need to concentrate on the hard drive anyhow, but I am keeping 2 monitors & maybe I'll keep the performa case & use it to house a vcr.

Oh yes I got my power extension & a monster it is too!

a diagram is needed I think;

I lost 2 whole cables!

Sorry Trash but you lost me, you need to do a pic too maybe.

would the following item suffice for me to watch tv(terrestrial) through my Quadra 840av?

There are three sockets:

TV Out
Ant In (i.e. from your TV ariel)
CATV In (i.e. the cable from the cable socket!)

There's also two plugs for Audio and Video.

The only cable it comes with is the power cable.

See attached picture.

The seller says that there's two plugs for audio and video, and they probably mean that they're RCA, which is good. If you can get them to send you a pic of the back of the box, that would be great, and we could confirm that it does have an RCA video output, which is neccessary to output the video signal to your Quadra.

Okay, great! Generally, a yellow RCA port means that's it's video out. That's pretty standard internationally, I believe. So, you just run a signle RCA cable from that yellow RCA port to the yellow RCA video-in port on the back of your Quadra, and you've got video!

Getting the sound in is another problem, but shouldn't be too difficult. If you have some kind of a local electronics parts store like Radio Shack here in the US, you can get a cable that goes from two mono RCA male ports on one cable to a single, stereo mini-jack on the other. If you run this from the white RCA ports on the box to the sound-in port on your Quadra, you should be set.

Yes I think I follow what your saying so the Audio RAC needs to join with the videoRCA & both need to go into the Video in RCA on the Quadra?

No, no. Just run one RCA cable from video to video, the audio needs to have a separate cable going from the white RCA ports to the sound-in port on the Quadra. I'll try and make a diagram in a minute...

Yeah it seems obvious now.

Your right all apart from the fact that the box only has 1 audio rca.

You'll have to forgive me I am currently wrestling with my new 4.23 gig & at the same time am trying to get my cdr up & running(this has involved taking my Quadra apart several times) it is nice to see the insides of the quadra but messing with drives & jumpers is not so pleasant.

I probably wont buy that particular box but it has given me a good grasp of what I am looking for & hopefully I will now ask any seller all the right questions.

Thanks Cine

I know what you mean, I put a CD-R in my Quadra 840av the other day, and although it's working fine now, it took a little tweaking. The hardest part is getting the audio to work, because the standard audio cable that goes from the 840av mobo to the optical drive is actually only useful with Apple-branded CD-ROM's. So, I ended up using a spare cable that came with an ISA SoundBlaster card in one of the extra PC's I have lying around. It fit into the audio port on the back of the CD-R perfectly, and I had to force it a little to connect it to the 840av's mobo audio input, but it's working fine. I fired up Toadt and it's burning well! The best part is the faceless tray goes in and out of the caddy-bezel so perfectly, like it was made to do it!
