The lower "ranks" are all a bit unimaginative (Starting member, new member, junior member etc etc)

I assume these are all the default settings for the board. How about changing them to something else?

Maybe ranks - Private, Sergeant, Corporal etc etc..
or perhaps 68k processors (68000, 68020, 68030 etc)

Or anything thats a bit cooler and a bit more "in spirit" than the default. I'm sure we could think of something......

Cheers

I think it has something to do with not being able to change the PHP software...but I'm sure Coxy will explain, when he gets on!

I'm on Yahoo Messenger under "ephemeral_lingus". I can't get on AIM or any other IM service because of the firewall here at the office.

Hmm, I thought you would have been able to, since this board uses phpBB2 as does:

http://www.atariage.com/forums/

albeit in a simpler form to them, or am I wrong?

Cheers

Nah, I can change them, it just kind of goes against our tradition of felxible and fairly arbitary ranks.
I dunno, what do you think? A 'rank' based on posts count isn't a scheme I would like too much.

Maybe a partway thing - like say 68000 68020 68020 68040 until the 500 posts thing, and then... arbitrary 'stuff'

How about a MHz-based rank. You start out at 8 MHz (the original 128k) and get speedier as you post more. Maybe a log-based scale would work. Everytime you double the number of postings, you get 2 MHz. People with over 2 postings would have a rating of 10 Mhz. People with over 64 postings would have a rating of 16 Mhz (a Mac II woohoo!). And those verbose souls with over 1024 postings (you know who you are [;0]) would be rated at 28 MHz. Or, maybe a linear scale (8*Postings/10) might be better so that you break the GHz barrier at 1250 postings.

Just my 2 wait-cycles worth,

We could do that, but it wouldn't be generated on the fly, when you hit x posts your MHz rating would 'jump' up. It could work, though!

as long as the post count tiers can be changed to 64-128-256-612-1024 i got nopro with the idea!

any chance we can list the postcounts in hexadecimal so people don't post just to get'em higher or hold back to keep 'em lower?

1) Yeah.
2) No.

The main problem I have with changes like this is not in the implementation, but seeing who goes for and who opposes such a change. Some forum software lets you post polls, that would be good...

Yeah, that'd be pretty cool. I like the MHZ idea. What are the 500+ rankings now?

I'm not so sure it's all that arbitary when you really think about it. The whole idea behind rank is development of leaders. 5 star generals started at the bottom like everyone else. Those in here that are generating those high volumes of posts are examples of that leadership by giving help based on their knowlage to the extent they are. It also gives "YOU" the leaders another way of keeping track of potential members that could be brought up to "Moderator" level. Esspecially if and when you see a time to add more or expand on current topics to explore. For example, one of the members, markymark , really knows his stuff for that last hack of his. It impressed the hell out of me. When you see the knowage and commitment (post-count) that's represented, you'll be able to develope this site into so much more. There really is a lot of talent here. If you keep drawing off the current and new growing members here, you can do a heck of alot.

hmmn, looking back, maybe I should have put "Rant Mode". Thing is, I really belive in this place.

Current Mac's:
Mac Plus, SE30, Classic, LCII, (2) LC550, Centris 650, 7100/80, Performa 6214, PB2300c Duo w/dock, G3/400 "Shine On" [;-)]

I have been posting for a while & my posts are in the mid 300's so I am heading towards 500.

Will I get a rank at any time?

I could be chief antagonist, but really I would like something altogether more productive.

How can I contribute to the site in a productive manner(aside from my homepage having a link to it, which it already has)

As I read in another thread you need to be a moderator to get a title. Titles would be awsome!

I was thinking about implementing a ranking scheme, actually, rather than changing the titles solely based on post count.
Thanks for reminding me, I think I'll have a talk with the mods.

MHz or 64-128-256-612-1024 would be great, as well as being able/required to create a truly unique rank for your sig.
