Replacement Laserwriter Toner Drum Blades

Got me that tool that allows you to open the cartridge. Only $5 :)

Hopefully it will be easier to open the cartridge.

Wow, impressive results. Looks promising. That black line is simply caked on toner the blade can't fully scrape off. Try opening the large door on the bottom of the cartridge, and turning the drum until you see it, then gently wipe it off. Do this in a low light area.

If for some reason it starts ghosting, and you don't feel comfortable replacing the blade, I just got a new toner cartridge in today that I could replace the blade on for you. Also, if you wanted to ever sell those pliers, let me know (Or let me know if they work!).
 
Yes, I have opened the door and wiped the toner off twice already but it keeps coming back. When I turn the drum I don't even see the caked on toner, the drum is clean
 
Well, since the line doesn't repeat, it doesn't seem like a drum issue. I'd keep running it and see what happens. Do you see any sort of faint line on the drum? Would be a grayish horizontal line if it is damaged.

I'm guessing that's a deformed PCR roller. I had replaced the wiper blade in a 98A cartridge and had the same symptoms. I took the PCR roller from another cartridge and swapped it in and my prints are now 100% perfect - like a brand new printer (LaserWriter 16/600 PS)

Now I know way more about how laser printers work than I ever thought I would!

So these blades will work for all Apple LaserWriter II cartridges, and all cartridges for the HP LaserJet II and III printers. Any HP 92295.

Thank you for this bit of information! With this I was happy to order (overseas) one of those blades and attempt installing it into an old 3rd-party cartridge (compatible with the HP92295) on my NeXT N2000 laser printer, and I am happy to report that it was a success!

Does anyone know a current source for those Ames pin pullers? I couldn't find one. Inspired from a great tutorial video about these cartridges I went thru my jar of screws and found one that worked pretty well and I was able to pull the tabs out without damage.

In theory, I've finally chased down a supplier for these FA9-2733-000 blades. If successful, I'll have a limited supply of those incoming. The per-unit cost was.... not optimal, but finding any supplier who'd even acknowledge the possibility of getting the part made or ordered was difficult.
 
Very interesting, and you can sign me up for a few. I have my beloved LaserWriter II that I have fixed up, and the only thing letting it down now is the not-quite-perfect cartridge (although it's not too awful).

But now I'm wondering if this supplier could also do wiper blades for the original LaserWriter/LaserWriter Plus, with its Canon CX engine? I think the blades are just called "CX wiper blades". I did find a company that would do it a while back, but their page now doesn't work so I don't know if they no longer would.
 
Hm, that'd be HP 85A which oddly enough isn't yet on my list, my next tortuous process project was for HP 75A (Personal LaserWriter NTR M2000 for relevance here) but I can add it to the list...

My sourcing for the blade for HP 95A (LBP-SX/UX) is actually for NeXT laser printers but obviously works for all. (I'm also working the fuser bulb, but being that NeXT N2000 is actually LBP-UX and not SX it's slightly different and incompatible with SX models)

I've already got Wiper/Doctor blades for HP 98A/98X on hand finally, and on friday I should be receiving a stock of OPC drums for those.

This whole journey started from my LJ4 toner cartridge running out and me refusing to let it die... ;)

I discovered the wonderful world of obsolete parts sourcing. It went from "damn toner low" to "F#@)%*@#)% now i'm the proud owner of a toner vac then" (blade shredded on a NOS 2008 cartridge upon first use and dumped out the entire cart) to buying out every last US-based source of the LJ4 parts and then straight on to overseas manufacturers directly once I cleaned out US and Canada of supplies.... ;)

The supplier I had tapped for the 95A blades (FA9-2733-000 equivalent anyway) seems they may tap out, so I'll probably have to raise my order amount to compensate.... but I didn't expect to have results in hand for another two or three months anyway, so this isn't terrible, I have some NOS 95A units coming to make design diagrams with to get a custom production run done if the other leads don't pan out or a higher order can't interest them. I probably won't like the price, but that's kind of how that works with this old stuff, I suppose.
 
Still working the blades, but I've got a heat lamp manufacturer on tap now - almost got the NeXT fuser bulb design diagram locked in, will be ordering a sample pack of 10 on monday when the final revision is provided to me.

Once I've got that squared away, I probably will be able to easily do for other printers (like the laserwriters) as well, if NOS bulb stock proves hard to find ... pricing TBD of course.
 
The blades, well, the news isn't good. $2k to make new molds to produce new ones.

$2k to make new molds to produce new blades. I might have to charge $100/blade for the initial lot to cover the tooling cost. Assuming I can sell at least 20 of them.... they're shared with apple printers, so I think that might work out. But that's where we stand today. $1970 to produce a new production mold.
 
The company I had a quote for, for the 85A blades was a lot cheaper than that - I can't remember off the top of my head who it was, but it'll be in my emails. Let me try and find out and see if they can still do it, and maybe if they can do the 95A blades too.
