Power book 180

I am trying to fix my second power book 180, but this time it is not as simple as diode. This time I get 7.7v on the first power inductor ( red and black ). Power does not flow further, Second power inductor seems to be shorted to ground , black probe on the ground, red on either end, meter in continuity mode, and I get beep on both ends. I am correct here in saying that power inductor is gone? or there is something else
One more interesting thing is that U3 chip is getting hot, over 30 deg, other remain cold.

who ever opened this machine before me, did not take care. LCD screen cable has been cut. Machine now powers on with a chime, but when I press interrupt button I get sad/ dead mac chimes

yup this is normal if it's sitting at the flashing ? or something. pressing the interrupt button fires an NMI and the only thing that catches it is the sad mac handler thingy. that's actually quite a good sign.

At the moment i can’t see as the LCD cable has been damaged. I get back light and screen turns on but that is as far as she goes. Ordered another cable from England and waiting to replace it.
Then I have to deal with broke plastic stand offs. I may use UV resin to secure them in place

Get a PowerBook external video cable, there's a million on eBay. You will also need a Mac to VGA adapter. That will allow you to troubleshoot without the display.

You probably know this, but these can run "headless" without the LCD display attached.

You probably know this, but these can run "headless" without the LCD display attached.

Just one thing to remember. A PowerBook 180 (without a working internal display) connected to an external monitor may default to video mirroring off. This means that the external display shows an extended part of the Desktop only, without a menu bar. If necessary, a special trick will allow video mirroring to be toggled on/off via the space bar. A slightly modified Network Access Disk 7.5 startup floppy, with a little PowerBook Display control panel (version 7.5.2) placed in the Startup Items folder, can be used for this.
