Portable draining battery

Hi.

I bought a Macintosh Portable around 2012. I've since slowly been rebuilding it and whilst it's now looking quite nice (only a little broken plastic tabs around the rear cover) it STILL has issues with power/charging. I have previously washed the motherboard, replaced all caps and replaced the power hybrid (with the remade version).

It's now in a state that once it's charged up, it works and I can run it on the battery for a very reasonable 8-10 hours (has a BlueSCSI for the hard disk).

The problem is that once shutdown, the main battery (a new 6V 4,5Ah unit packed inside the original battery case) gets drained very quickly. I installed a new 6V main battery less than 2 weeks ago, verified that all worked great, shut the machine down and put it into shelf. Now it's already deep discharged, the voltage level measured from the DC input jack (which seems to be closely tied to the battery voltage) is around 4 volts. It's slowly taking charge and the voltage is rising, so I presume it will recover, I hope. But in any case if the battery gets drained in less than two weeks, that doesn't sound correct and it would be a bit too much work to keep the battery from dying. Unplugging the main battery before shelving I guess should work, but that's again more stress for the plastic tabs or the top cover.

Does the new power hybrid have anything to do with the charging, or does the old wisdom of using only max 1A charging current still exist? Even with the new hybrid, the battery meter in System 6 never reaches max and it will usually stop charging it around 85% or the meter and then lets the battery to discharge even with the power sitll plugged in.

Any ideas?

This is normal. They don’t have a shutdown mode and keep draining battery. The lead acid battery is meant to be kept on float charge.

You can remove the battery if you want to store it longer term but you’ll want to pull the 9V too

I knew the Portable's power management was bad... but I still find it hard to accept that it can literally kill a new lead-acid battery in a week? I had a peek on the owner's guide but it really doesn't warn one about this.
