I no longer have access to the source (darn zip drive!)

Do you simply not have a Zip drive anymore? Or is the disk itself lost to history?

no longer have access to the source (darn zip drive!) or the ability to generate codes for it.

If you still have the disk, it may be possible to still recover your files. There are a few people who specialize in data recovery and would likely do it for free.
