Dead Classic II after recap?

I have recapped my classic ii and got the sound back. It was working fine. However, I was troubleshooting the floppy drive and I moved the mac a little bit while I was testing the drive and out of the blues my screen went jailbars along with the last image of the screen. After that my hard drive would no longer spin up, 68030 is boiling hot in 30 seconds and I get no chime or anything other than jailbars. The reset button interrupts the screen but the same jailbars reappear immediately. Im thinking something shorted out. Ah the hard drive controller chip on the hard drive itself is also super hot when powered on. I know analog board is fine. I have a spare HD so now I think I might need a board? Please help! :( Thanks in advance. -JP

Hi JP,

Retrace your steps during recapping. It sounds isolated to the motherboard (check voltages at ext floppy connector to ensure voltage rails are
OK when powered on). Good chance you’ll find something in your travels, and check for corrosion on nearby ICs surrounding the caps replaced.

Thank you... I have also washed the board to remove the goo. Im worried my processor might be fried? Its super hot when powered on and displays the jailbars. Also the hdd board seems to be fried. It wont spin up-not even with an external psu

Was the analog board also recapped? The analog board on Classic/Classic II is notorious for being unstable if not recapped and cleaned properly. Maybe it failed to regulate the 5v rail and fried several components. It's totally possible, as the regulation feedback IC is near an area that very often is exposed to conductive electrolyte leakage from the dying output filter caps.

It's unlikely the CPU has fried, I would keep checking the surrounding ICs for any corrosion under magnification. The hard disk heads are probably stuck, check model number there might be a repair unsticking the heads or doing a small repair to get it spinning again.

I swapped the hdd board from a donor drive and it spins up normal. So something definitely ruined it. I have not recapped the analog board. The 12v line is at 11.54v and the 5v line at 4.8v. I have checked the caps on the mobo and none seem to be shorted out. Im running out of things to try.

You need to recap the analogue board. They are so cheap and so failure prone it’s amazing you have gotten this far.

Yea, my Classic II started sizzling and smoking right at the analogue board or power supply a few weeks ago when I turned it on. I wish I knew how to recap it. I never recapped anything and I have no skills in that department. It's a recapped motherboard I bought 2 years ago from someone and it has an FPU card which I bought from @moldy, it can have a bootable ROM disk.

I'm trying to decide if I want to sell it but I would want the whole Mac to go or nothing. I don't want to be left with another skeleton compact chassis. First, I'm going to investigate further the possibility of hiring someone with those skills and expertise on recapping the analogue board and power supply.

My list of Macs and accessories which need repair is growing and things are getting expensive so this may be shelved for later.
