Color Classic's Floppy drive works externally but not internally, Why???

What our very direct friend here is trying to say is that the symptoms you are describing means it is most likely that the issue is with the Color Classic logic board, not the disk or disk drive (since these work ok elsewhere). Since capacitor leakage is by far the main cause of logic board...

Troubleshooting a Flaky Houdini II DOS/PC Compatibility Card & Cooling Upgrades

Just want to share my solution - there is a replacement 3D printable replacement for the bracket, I've modified it to house 2x60mm fans. Since there is no HD the vent on the left is exposed and they can suck air in from there and blast it into the Hot Sandwich. It works! Not too noisy, it's...

    Quadra 605 build log

I would recommend leaving the clock chip alone, you can get to 40MHz with the software overclock!

    Unable to find HD SE/30

Ooh interesting, I haven't done so much diagnosing - I only really know how to replace caps, no idea how to troubleshoot issues 😅 I can test continuity around the fuses next time I have it open!

    Unable to find HD SE/30

Watching this thread since it sounds similar to an issue I am having with an SE/30 - it boots fine from floppy, but is unable to detect SCSI stuff. I've recapped it so maybe I messed something up, it had worked before.

    Quadra 605 build log

Since you mentioned Hotline and RealBasic, I want to plug Hotstuff - it's a new Hotline client that's being developed in RealBasic by Knezzen, runs on 68k macs! https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/hotstuff

    Quadra 605 build log

I replaced mine with a Noctua A4x10, it's a drop-in replacement and virtually silent with the low noise adapter. I loop the excess cable under the SCSI ribbon - this photo is a WIP assembly but you get the idea. Highly recommended, it's so quiet now!

    I got a Power PC 8600/200

If you are not passionate about it, it makes sense to get a good overview of its condition, maybe recap the logic board, and then pass/sell it on to someone who will appreciate it more. Remember that not everyone who wants an 8600 knows how to recap, so the next owner might appreciate it! My...

    Quadra 605 build log

Haha well done on solving the "get software on to the old mac" puzzle! If you had access to a floppy disk and drive you caaaaan also use dd to write disk images from a modern OS onto floppy, but my experience has been mixed. This illustrates exactly why I went with blueSCSI 😅 fire up...

    Quadra 605 build log

I would 100% recommend getting an SD-card solution for the hard drive, it is a gigantic quality of life enhancement! I held out for a while and it was just needlessly painful. Now I can just set up hard drive images in an emulator, easily back things up and copy them freely around different...

    Quadra 605 build log

Nice! These machines are great - I'd recommend swapping out the fan for a modern one (there is a Noctua that just clicks in). And be sure to try the software overclock as well! As for derating tantalums - I use 16V and have had no issues, so 25V should be ample

    LC475 Recap

The LC475 rules, and you should totally recap it :D I've used good quality tantalums for mine. The LC form factor is super easy to work with, so if you want to feel a little extra security, you can do one cap at a time and test power on inbetween each cap removal. It takes longer, but that way...

What FPS do you get in Quake on your machine?

A friendly user on the TD Discord ran some tests and posted these numbers: - Power Mac 6500/225 overclocked to 300MHz - 136MB RAM (8MB added onboard, 2x64MB sticks) - stock L2 cache - generic 2GB CF card - Mac OS 9.1 - virtual memory on - Screen at 256 colours 1024x768 - Quake at 320x200. -...

What FPS do you get in Quake on your machine?

Don't worry about the NuBus thing, all numbers are good numbers 😆 Crazy result with the G3/250 vs G3/400, wonder why it hits a brick wall like that!

    LC/LCII Power Supply Replacements?

Make sure the black heatsink does not touch the metal enclosure for the original PSU, since it can short out and ruin it. It has some protective black paint on it, but it can chip off. I covered the meanwell with some black insulation I got from inside an XServe, and taped up the reverse side of...

    Um, what cable is this?

@MBongo I think this one is intended for the dual page display, but it will definitely work with the Portrait Display. I have one exactly like this and have used it with my Portrait Display, just means there's two extra coaxes on the left there that don't connect to anything on the Portrait Display.

    Um, what cable is this?

Yep that's for the Portrait Display connecting to the Portrait Display NuBus card - there is also a version that has a DA-15 connector in one end. It's a bit more flexible and easier to deal with than the tripple coax version!

Picked up a few macs, don't know where to start

Nice! The DOS compatibility cards from the 61xx-style machines should also work in any Quadra with a Quadra-style PDS, if you can't repair the bombed logic boards and want to put the DOS card somewhere else.

    LC/LCII Power Supply Replacements?

+1 for the Meanwell RPT-60A. It fits inside the original LC PSU housing so unless you open up the PSU itself it looks like the original part. It provides +5V, -5V, and +12V and is intended for medical grade equipment so it seems pretty reliable. Not much trouble getting it mounted in there, just...

    Nick's finds

Love those things! If you want an official cable, this one looks correct to me, though depending on where in the world you are the shipping might be too much. Ends fairly soon, though! https://www.ebay.com/itm/306474827242?_skw=macintosh+13w (The Portrait Display only needs the one coax connector)
