I use one of those external SCSI cases with a CD ROM drive in it. The case that is meant to sit underneath the Mac SE. It's just enough height to raise it up enough to work on the compacts directly.

Have you checked inside the system folder? Usually there is an Aladdin folder inside the system folder where temp files go.

Probably a dumb question but did you remember to install a vram SIMM? Maybe swap out the one from the LC II. I started my performa once without any vram and it chimed and booted but I couldn’t see anything.
