    Phil's iBook 700MHz Adventures

Ah, I see your edit now. The current SSD prices truly are a shame for upgrading these old computers. I used to be able to get a 120GB mSATA drive for only around $20-25! The issue with SD cards, besides for the lower speeds, are that they aren't really designed to handle being used as a page...

IDE to mSATA would be a far better solution for a system this new. OS X is going to be hard on a little SD card.

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

I'm glad you like it! I haven't seen Star Trek so I can't say that's my inspiration, but I don't mind the comparison :) I've mainly just based it off 2000s era web design as much as I could. I'm a big fan of the frutiger aero aesthetic so I've been slowly introducing those elements to the extent...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

We're close to the end of day 1 with the 2010 MacBook as my main computer. Core 2 Duo definitely isn't obsolete yet if you pair it with a good amount of RAM and an SSD. I'm definitely going to get sick of the limited screen resolution though, I like having a lot of desktop space. Observations...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Yeah I'm definitely getting trolled. It's fine with just about any RAM module as long as the 2GB DDR3-8500 module is in one of the slots. I've currently got it running with that module plus an 8GB 12800S DDR3L module, which is far outside what Apple ever designed this laptop with the intention...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Now I'm being trolled. I spent 30 minutes digging around for compatible RAM to upgrade this thing to 8GB (it has 6 right now). Old config was 2GB in the bottom slot, 4GB in the top. I found a matching Hynix 4GB module of the same exact type and speed as the 4GB stick in there, but this MacBook...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Mine only looks nice because it had a bad keyboard and I managed to find a NOS palmrest/keyboard to install. Here's the bottom, warped and yellowed as all of them are haha. If you look closely at my earlier photos, you can see that the display bezel is also slightly yellowed.

Thanks for the wishes of luck! "I hope that's all it is" has turned into "This MacBook won't see the installer USB when it's formatted as MBR which means I'm going to have to install Windows 7 off of DVD-ROM and then try to upgrade the install to 10 afterwards". Woohoo 🫠

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Looks like the issue might be that I'm booting Windows in UEFI instead of Legacy. I hope that's all it is!

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

I might have to give up on Windows 10 and drop back to 7. Trying to run multiple version of the NVIDIA installer causes the laptop to crash and reboot...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Ah, the joys of getting drivers working on an unsupported version of windows. This is already Windows install attempt 2. Attempt 1 corrupted itself when I let it get online and automatically try to install drivers...

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

Battery woke up. It was at 86% health last time I cycled it, 200 something cycles. Wanted to install it but of course Apple being Apple I first have to completely redo my partition map and install just Mavericks. So doing that now.

The battery may have gone dead - it isn’t immediately charging. Hopefully it will wake up after a few minutes! Currently I have Catalina and Mavericks dual booted. You’re probably not gonna like what I’m replacing this setup with.

A Challenge: Plastic Macbooks for July

In that case I've got a 2010 that I could try to set up as my daily for a week... Battery life is probably sub-1 hour at this point but I'll manage. I do have something more in the spirit of the challenge, that being a box of miscellaneous 2006 and 2007 white macbook parts which should in...

    Wiki Review: Capacitor Replacement

I like this a lot. One of the reasons I think many (myself included) would be hesitant to contribute to the wiki is that it has been so frequently offline for long stretches of time. This combats that somewhat, although I think the most important thing y'all can really do is make sure that it...

    Wiki Review: Capacitor Replacement

I have no problem with people reproducing the capacitor reference data on the wiki. I will note however that if you also wanted to include images, the vast majority of reference photos in MacDat's cap reference library were sent to me by other people. You would have to reach out to them to ask...

    Wiki Review: Capacitor Replacement

I see a few things that should be changed. - Note the 25V distinction with Tantalums as mentioned - Hardly anyone uses the described method for removing the original capacitors. No one can agree on what the best method for doing this is (twisting them off, hot air, clipping them off, soldering...
