What're you using your Mac Pro for?

Driving a bunch of retro synths (into a modern USB sound card) with Logic 9 / 10.9.5. I definitely do not play them as much as I should though!

ADC Studio Display in OS 9

The GeForce 2MX fits in the cube but I found it ran _way_ too hot for my tastes. I meant to investigate whether it's possible to modify a firmware and downclock it to run cooler. Would still be faster than the rage 128 pro I think. The 4mx doesn't fit unless you move the VRM. The 7500 sounds...

    6500/250 Woes

Ah, that's a shame. Seems like a logic board is the next try, hopefully it's not some issue with the connector the logic board plugs into. If there is no chime, how do you know it is resetting PRAM?

    6500/250 Woes

Pull the L2 G3, all but one stick of ram, all the PCI cards, etc. If it boots, start adding things back in to narrow down the problem.

MacSurf — a real NetSurf-based browser for Mac OS 9 (CSS3, ES5 JS, native HTTPS)

Why would you remove CLAUDE.md before posting this? Do you think it isn’t obvious?

SevenTTY — local shell + terminal + SSH for classic Mac OS

The tags show up on the front page, so you don't have to click in/read the post to determine it. Or in other cases, click through to the GitHub and look for AGENTS.md.

SevenTTY — local shell + terminal + SSH for classic Mac OS

Whether to use these machines should be a personal decision, but posting their outputs to a hobby website and saying you made them(!) is fair game for debate. I would at the very least like to see a tag here like in the trading post titles.

    Weird RAM issue - PowerMac11,2

My new (to me) quad shows a weird mix of speeds in system profiler too across its 8 GB. It will be interesting to try the AHT method.

I've never noticed any difference in USB vs serial in OS 9. Do you have a reference with some measurements?

It is! (Don't tell anybody, I compiled this on my Cube running 9.2.2, which is necessary for my USB sound card)

StarMax 4000 only boots via CUDA reset button?

Oh interesting, last time I tried to use the Starmax it wouldn’t power on. I just chalked it up to “Starmax things”. Will have to try CUDA reset.

    Boomer 2

In honor of Marathon 2's 30th anniversary(!), I dug out the Marathon Infinity source code, found a version of MPW that would work to build it, and then patched out any changes affecting gameplay. The result, Boomer 2, provides authentic Marathon 2 gameplay / film playback / network...

Do StuffIt 5.5 archives encode the resource fork safely for transfer to a non-Mac ?

I too would like some documentation of why DU doesn't work, as well as what has changed to make dd not work. But I wasn't able to find any at the link, and none was forthcoming here. The script is just magic I guess.

Do StuffIt 5.5 archives encode the resource fork safely for transfer to a non-Mac ?

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding of what dd does here, which I suppose is not out of line with this entire thread.

Do StuffIt 5.5 archives encode the resource fork safely for transfer to a non-Mac ?

There is a version of dd that doesn’t do the only thing dd is designed to do?
