That's a very interesting idea, though I would worry about the mechanical stability of placing a ZIF module on the BGA footprint. (Though I guess you could use the old heatsink mounting points to anchor the adapter in place)
You can buy pre-crimped JST cables from china pretty cheaply so you could always splice one of those with the socket form a mole to sata adapter. It's just a matter of figuring out exactly which JST variant it uses as there is a bunch of differen't ones
Thanks :) I'm very happy with how it has come out and was certainly not expecting it to boot on the first try!
Thanks ;) Case will probably be something 3d printed but we haven't really decided yet, this may not even be the final form factor as this design was mainly done to be easy to test
I...
Ah, C8 is also the wrong way round, that is on VCC for the EGRET chip so if that's shorting (as tants then to do when subjected to reverse voltage) it will definitely make the system crash / reboot
Looks like you have a jumper from the positive side of C13 to pin 3 of LP2 which isn't correct, the positive pin of C13 should connect to one side of R37 and one side of R54 (both are on the other side of the board)
This shows where it should be connected to (Blue parts are pads / traces on the...
That is actually something that is on my list of things to do :)
Unfortunately that list is very long so if someone else want to have a crack at it please be my guest!
Board layout, gerbers and scans are now on GitHub:

As with my other designs these are provided under a non-commercial licence but if you are a repairer and want to offer transplant services (or have any other commercial use in mind) please contact...

The LC II doesn't have a scsi termpower fuse however it is conceivable if shorted the diode at D1 (Just below the external scsi connector) could be damaged so it might be worth checking that if your heaving termpower issues
I have confirmed modern LCD's with the HD44780 compatible controllers do work fine on the techstep :)
I thought I had posted that in this thread but I guess not... Must have only mentioned it in PM's with @jajan547
Here is the techstep working with a modern backlit LCD (Which looks much...
From some old threads it seems the AM29LV040B, PM39LV040 or MX29LV040 are the only supported chips by the stock formware though I can't say I ever tried it on one of the SST chips
Really? I thought all the supported chips where 3.3v? The SST39SF0x0 series are all 5v chips (the LF are the 3.3v ones)
EDIT: Haveing dug through some old threads it looks like the AM29LV040B, PM39LV040 or MX29LV040 are the only supported chips by the stock firmware
I'll try it tomorrow, my...
After a long round of troubleshooting and parts sourcing the first batch are almost ready, just need to do final testing on the cards. Current intention is to offer fully populated / tested / working cards. Will hopefully be posting them in the trading post this weekend :)
Much progress has been made since the my last post to this thread!
Stage 2 is now more or less complete, All the hardware has been reverse engineered and new boards have been drawn up and sent off for manufacture.
A quick overview of the current status of the hardware:
Logicboard:

When creating straight copies of PCB's I generally favour Sprint layout, it allows you to import scans and trace over them and once you get used to it it is quick and easy to use however it has a couple of drawbacks - it dosen't create any kind of netlist or have any schematic tied to the design...
