    PowerBook 520 screen question

The cable is specific to each screen type and manufacturer, so you will need a Toshiba TFT cable in order to use that screen.

    Duo screen fix?

If you're really lucky, it's just an open via or trace on the panel's PCB. Chances are though that the caps damaged connections in the driver ribbon that sits right next to them, in which case that panel is toast. Look really close at the cable next to the caps and check for dark spots (corrosion).

    My 3lectr1cal Conquests!

I actually just got a new shelf a few months ago 😅 Had to shuffle things around after the swap meet because the two wood ones became full:

    My 3lectr1cal Conquests!

I just found a laptop that I never expected I would! A PowerBook 180 with (effectively) no tunnel vision! Okay, so if you leave it on for an hour and a half and then pixel-peek the left corners, there will be a tiny tiny bit of darkening. But it’s so minor that a camera won’t even pick it up...

    PowerBook 3400 Battery in 5300

Very interesting info! My 190cs will run off of a 3400 battery (presumably won't charge one but I haven't checked). My 5300ce on the other hand does not run off of one whatsoever. Both are "AA" units that went through Apple's service program. Both run fine off the original NiMH batteries so it's...

    VCF Swap Meet 2025 Haul

I'll have to see if I do. I definitely have a spare 14.1" panel, question is whether or not it's compatible. Will let you know if I don't.

    VCF Swap Meet 2025 Haul

So far I think I still prefer the PDQ over this one, but it certainly is a quite nice machine. Thinner and faster, although my PDQ has a 466MHz upgrade card in it (this Pismo is a 400). I let the battery charge up and it lasted for one entire minute before dropping to zero, lol.

    VCF Swap Meet 2025 Haul

W530 is basically a souped up T530 that has a Quadro and a few other enhancements. They’re pretty nice machines! Here’s the Pismo: Unfortunately, it has a line in the screen. Can’t complain though since it was cheap. The battery holds a charge! Not sure how much yet, coconutbattery showed...

    VCF Swap Meet 2025 Haul

Maybe hearing that I finally got a Pismo can bring @Phipli back from the dead? We'll see I suppose :) Will post photos later.

    VCF Swap Meet 2025 Haul

This year was my 4th time at the VCF East Swap Meet in Wall, NJ. As usual, I left with a bunch of cheap vintage laptops to repair and enjoy! We'll start with the Macs: PowerBook G3 Pismo: Yep, finally got one. It's a 400MHz unit, HDD has been upgraded to 60GB. Seller says it works. Cosmetics...

    jmacz journey

Drop everything and recap that 840AV's logic board! The traces on those boards are tiny and seem to be very easily damaged by the cap goo. Lucky that yours is still functional pre-recap - that's a score.

Recommended SSD / IDE adapter combo that works with OS 9? (iBook clamshell)

Only some of them, and good luck finding one that’s guaranteed to work. For 90% of cases, I find SD adapters work just as well, and SD cards are a lot cheaper than CF (and faster). CF works well if you find the right cards, but I’ve had terrible luck with that.

OS X Developer Preview on Pismo?

The main issue with the Kanga (and likely why Apple never supported OS X on it) is that it lacks 3D accelerated graphics, which OS X really needs. All the later G3s use ATI 3D graphics, while the Kanga uses the Chips & Technologies 65554 chip (the 3400c uses the 65550 which is similar but a bit...

Duo 250 - Original caps (or not)?

Still worth checking the inverter just in case. I have it marked that I don’t know whether the 250 inverter has any electrolytics or not.

The processor card for a 170 works in a 145b, in case anyone's curious

The 140, 145, 145B, and 170 all use the same motherboard, so the CPU cards from all of them are cross compatible. Same goes for the 160, 165, and the 180. I think the 165c and 180c cards are different from the regular 160 and 180.
