    I definitely don't want the batteries outside my plan was to use an external SD-SCSI and mount the batteries where the HD normally sits. Will probably do same but with coin cells now. Thanks for all the input guys!

    @Compgeke you're absolutely correct I would be coming in 0.6v under (2 x 1.5v). For some reason I thought I read somewhere this configuration would work but was a while ago. Each pair of AA's is directly wired into the original holder terminals, no series.
