• Updated 2023-07-12: Hello, Guest! Welcome back, and be sure to check out this follow-up post about our outage a week or so ago.

Won a Performa 5210CD, importing it. What should I look out for?

Might as well ship it in a wood crate - or not at all at this point. Just too darn fragile, seeing a Japan exclusive AIO from this time in the US is going to be even rarer than it otherwise would have been. Sucks because I'd love one of those black 5xxx machines, but they weren't sold in the US.

I think I saw one up for auction but I didn't bother with it. :/
I'm very sure shipping these is a pain in the ass.
However, while I have the machine apart, I have considered adding a 3.3V regulator to the edge connector to give it support to run Power Macintosh 6400/6500 boards with its slots filled and such. Where could I find a suitable regulator for the edge connector? I think I know the Takky CCs require it to work with the PCI boards.
And yes, this is an exclusive machine to Europe and Japan... but it's really just a 5200/75LC with L2 cache added onto it and a different (and interesting for japan) set of software. I'll be sure to image the discs it came with, too.

Made this little graphic for my website's computer list while I'm stuck at school doing nothing.
Yes, it was moreso the problem with shipping a CRT in general, but FedEx also just has a pretty well-known reputation for just breaking stuff.

IMO not FedEx's fault. That is not properly packed. Too many gaps and chances to move around. Only one thin layer of bubble wrap? Never had an issue with FedEx.

I second that. There was no way one thin layer of bubble wrap was going to protect that! Even three layers of bubble wrap wasn't enough for me.

Grief, you're right. A Hot Wheels 5210CD would be amazing, especially if that was because it was it was salvaged from a shipping disaster

Thirded. @k24a1 please make this ridiculous idea a reality. I can't think of much that's less appropriate than a 5XXX Mac with flame decals, so it surely must happen.

Forgot about this thread.
I tried.
For some reason the HDD isn't detected and the new fan I put in causes the screen to wobble around.

Not bad so far! I'll bet you could get a better fit with some different glue, Plastruct plastic weld seems to work pretty well on ABS. I'll bet the fan issues are due to some sort of magnetic interference with the CRT, not sure how you'd get around that.

Well... I'm reaching out to local networks in my city to see if anyone has a Mac of this design, or something better; this computer is really on its last legs. I've misplaced several parts from this machine when I moved everything around for when our family got AT&T fiber... and so far I couldn't find them anywhere. Also curious if anyone here has a 5200/5300/5400/5500... though the main issue would be getting it to my location.

Honestly I don't have much time to mess with this poor nutcase of a system. If anyone is interested in Rev A 5xxx parts, I am planning to part the machine out and sell whatever works.
