Which UDS model do you have? According to the docs, the UDS-10 and subsequent models should use port 9999 for telnet config... maybe a firmware update is available?

As far as dynamic DNS is concerned, I have a no-ip.com address from the dial-up days that reroutes all traffic (including telnet) to the domain so that telnet://luddite.no-ip.com hits my BBS just like telnet://ld8.org , so you should be okay going that route. Assuming the network isn't completely bolted down, couldn't you just have the UDS connect on a non-standard port? Presumably your BBS doesn't care much how the UDS is set up so long as it delivers a serial connection.

@luddite:

Well, the university doesn't have ANY port forwarding, so I'm somewhat stuck there. And as a student they won't be giving me any, especially since I know from one of the IRT staff that I'm actually on their "watch list" which basically means that every so often my firewall lights up like a Christmas tree when they do all kinds of invasive scans on me to see I'm not tinkering with their network. I never did anything to their network, but a friend told me it's because I was running a loopback proxy and firewalling, etc. on my own router inside of their network, which blocks out alot of their sniffing and poking around my machines, which they are not happy about. Since they do it to everyone else on campus. Bloody control freaks.

And my Lantronix is older than the UDS-10: it's an MSS-VIA, which is discontinued quite a while ago. I don't quite remember what port you're supposed to get to on it, I'm sure it's in the docs somewhere.

EDIT: from most of the documentation I have read on the MSS-VIA, it's really intended for direct serial tunneling applications or for outgoing interfaces (which is what I use it for now) and not really for the kind of thing I want to make it be. I'll conquer it eventually, I hope.

Well, the RetroBaud has now officially been retired. I had a lot of fun (after the frustration) getting it going - but even more fun BBS'ing once it was up. I also enjoyed getting me Apple IIe card going in my LC475 despite not being able to get the BBS running on it.

I was a bit MIA for the last week of the RC, I had hoped to write a high scores module for the door games on the RetroBaud, but just wasnt able to do it.

I have to say that I'd highly recommend the RC to anyone. Its a laugh and by entering myself, I found that I felt a little more connected to the other contestants and their challenges (there were some really good ones complimented by great blogs).

The final stats for the RetroBaud were:

Users Registered (including me) : 9

Number of Calls taken during the RC : 77

Number of messages posted : 31

Games:

Microbandit. WGOODF takes it out with a late run, which I'd have to say was a bit of an upset as LUDDITE was clearly the most consistent player during the RC and led right until the end.

WGOODF $432.50

LUDDITE $303

GAVO $248.50

URBANCAMO $55

ARFINK $46

MACMAN $28.50

COXY $7.50

One note tho WGOODF, dont be spending that cash too quick - its in NZ dollars, not pounds! ;-)

Rock Paper Scissors. A hard game to score, but I decided that rankings would be based on the percentage of games won (perhaps somewhat controversially) with a minimum of 30 games needed for a player to become eligible - on that theory, LUDDITE sneaks past WGOODF by the smallest of margins to take the victory.

LUDDITE 51 games won, 52 lost (49.5%) and 57 tied.

WGOODF 45 games won, 46 lost (49.4%) and 39 tied.

GAVO 51 games won, 68 lost (42.8%) and 51 tied.

MACMAN 4 games won, 2 lost (66.6%) and 4 tied.

URBANCAMO 3 games won, 5 lost (37.5%) and 2 tied.

Leeches. Turned out not to be the most popular game of the series (although I like it) - at the end of the RC no one was higher than Level 1. I did in fact make it to quite a high level, but was cuzed by the game near the end and so ended up with nothing. The winner here is clearly the RetroBaud - repelling all pretenders.

Anyway, this marks the absolute end of my 2009 winter warm up RC - well done to all - and see you next time.

Cheers,

-Gavo.

That was a fun BBS, unfortunately I only had the chance to play with it for one evening until major work related obligations got in the way. I laughed when playing Microbandit when I got something like $45 and then was mugged! Muggings aside, it was a very generous bandit.

Well, I really thought I was a shoe-in with MicroBandit, but I guess complacency killed me in the end. At least I can add the RPS victory to my CV.

I can barely believe I was on top of that microbandit for part of a day. I didn't even try.

Thanks to the good people at RetroNET, I now have somewhere to host some web pages. So, I have moved this bloggy type post over to there, and have even included two new amazing pictures of my LCe and Serial cable - wow. What are you waiting for?!?

Heres the link - http://retro-net.org:808/~gavo/
