What this forum is for...

Recently quite a few people on the forums have been discussing hardware hacks that they have done to their systems (for example, Mars478's GrayBook). As such, after some discussion we believe that the 68kMLA needs a forum dedicated for discussion on hacks and mods. We had one back in the days of the Snitz forum, and for a couple of years after we moved to phpBB, but it was removed sometime around 2005, since it wasn't being used.

Basically, this forum is for the discussion of hardware and software hacks, and although this is mostly a forum dedicated to 68k and PowerPC Macs, yes Intel Macs and PCs are welcome for discussion as well. Basically, if you put your Mac into a different case, or paint it, or connect something to it thats not meant to be connected to it, or if you get OS 9 running on your Quadra with a PowerPC upgrade, thats the sort of thing we want to hear about in here. :)

What this forum is not for is for the discussion of anything illegal, such as say....OSx86 or cracking pirated software - there's plenty of other places online for that.

Anyway, thats all from me for now....enjoy! :beige:

...so pretty much any hacking that isn't... as my local library's stupid WebSense firewall classifys it... "Illegal or Questionable"

Basically, yeah. Anything involving software piracy, or hacking into the Pentagon or your financial institution or whatever is strictly prohibited here. Anything else, such as the examples I mentioned before though, you're good to go.

HARDWARE HACKING! [:D] ]'> Any illegal "software hacking" shall henceforth be referred to using proper nomenclature: CRACKING! . . . and will not be tolerated! [;)] ]'>

Any Linux oriented hardware hacking is OK, even for certain NetBSD derived commercial distributions. However, we won't discuss setting up/modding software for running anything that might disturb the mother ship. There are other places for those discussions, the hardware discussion is fine..

Lets face it, our favorite Beige & Platinum Boxes have Logic Boards that are beginning to fail. What I'd really like to see are some ubuntu oriented hacks to keep as many of those beige and platinum boxes out of the landfills as possible. They can be given new life by transplanting the tiny MoBo form factors and processors available that'll support a current legal, FREE OS, OpenOffice, the GIMP etc.

68k/PPC MacOS-Centric Hacks will be our first priority, but there are PLENTY of other avenues to pursue here!

what does that accomplish? you have a modern machine in a fragile shell, its no more Macintosh than an Amiga with a apple sticker on the side, or my lamoid neighbors who has a Harley Davidson sticker on his Honda

PS: if you care to discuss this I don't think this would be the appropriate topic

Well are we allowed to say for example:

"So the PC I found on the curb, I put Mac OSX on it."

Is it allowed say that you put it on, but not discuss how you did it? Because I love putting OSX on PCs.

:)

WOOHOOO!!! Thanks to the mod crew!

Will the mods be moving appropriate threads here, or starting from a blank slate?

I'd like to nominate

the MPxPlayer

Core2Duo Color Classic

MarkS's video hacking

68060 speculations

Learning the hardware

dream peripherals

Attempts to emulate the 400k floppy and HD20

MacOS classic video driver hacking

LCD in CC

and VGA/CRT

... just to get started with :D

...so pretty much any hacking that isn't / "Illegal or Questionable"
Heck, half of the above are questionable  :simasimac: :scrambled: xx(

Basically, anything hardware related, you're pretty much good to go. You can say that you run OS X on your PC, but no, there's to be no discussion as to how to load OS X onto non-Apple hardware, since...well...we don't like it when we get sued. ;) If you want to discuss running OS X on non-Apple hardware, doing a Google search for either "OSx86" or "Hackintosh" brings up a few sites specialising in this, where you can discuss OSx86 to your heart's content....just not here. :p

However, please try to keep in mind that even though we are allowing Intel/PC talk in here, this is primarily a vintage Mac forum, and as such, it'd be great if most of the discussion in here was on 68k and PowerPC Macintosh systems.

Yep, that's all I need.

I am quite active on a few Hackintosh forums, and one about MSI Winds called InsanelyWind where I am an Admin and we discuss all kind of illegal things :) Just kidding.

Maybe, I think.

I move the last one be striked, there was no hack just download X file and run it

If we include that into the term hack you might as well just list the forum index

I'm just nominating; it's up to the mods and OPs what actually gets moved here, if anything.

Hey if nothing else, it provides a handy list of hacky topics.

If you can come up with a better way to learn about old macs than tearing them down to their components, mixing and matching to come up with a real life version of a VirtualHack or making improvements to "Stock Macs" you are free to make suggestions.

BTW, conserving the pre-Ives AppleDesign Aesthetic is high on my list of good things. IMHO, Apple's Industrial Design was right on the money from the 128k right up to the G-5 atrocity. Frog Design and its influence lasted well into the "Ives Era" and his "improvements" seem somewhat Anti-Mac to me. Conserving dead macs by transforming them into current ubuntu oriented usefulness is just as high on my list

Hacks are Hardware and software. Downloading a program can be considered a hack, though not done by you but the maker of the program. A hack nonetheless.

For example I installed BootXChanger on my iMac G5 and my Startup icon is an old world Happy Mac and I consider it a "Hack"

Just my $0.02 on Bunsen's list:

I'd like to see Hacks as more of a showcase than a technical Q&A about mods. Most of the listed topics either are technical questions appropriate for the forum they're currently in, and don't necessarily culminate in a successful hack. They are informative discussions, but seem more appropriate for their specific model forums. If someone has done a hack successfully and wants to show it off(The latest mac build. A Mac Plus/Core 2/Color), Hacks seems like the perfect forum for that. But discussion about how to do a specific task (Compact Flash in se/30, Transplanting Hard Disk Platters?, SCSI for the 512K (or 128?)) or components (Mac 128k ~ Plus Analog Board Analysis, 630 solder pads) seem appropriate for the respective model forums.

We are allowing talk of Intel macs now???????

Well, we really prefer it if you discuss 68k or PowerPC Macs....but its basically a case of, "If you must, you must." This forum is not only for technical discussion, but also for showing off hacks that you've done, such as Mars478's GrayBook, so if you've done a hack on an Intel Mac or a PC that you think is worthy of showing off, this is where that goes.
