I was all excited to install NB4* on my Q840, so I powered it on last night for the first time in about 10 months and ... no startup chime. Uh-oh. I use it as a server, so there's no monitor and it's way in the back of a deep shelf. Now I have to dig the monster out and try to diagnose what's wrong with it. Any suggestions what to check for first?

*If anyone is interested, John Klos has builds optimized for 68040 Macs on his ftp site. He says the difference is noticeable.

Had a dead 840 at the start of the week (similar symptoms - got a green light but no chime and no boot) and it was suggested that leaving the power connected for about 20-30 minutes might do the job. I ended up cleaning the motherboard (rather than the 20-30 minute power option) and that seemed to do the trick too

My PowerPC 6100 has a dead battery, when I initially power it on I get nothing, but rapidly switching off and back on again then kicks it into life.

Ahhh, jump some juice into the circuits eh? If it is only a battery I'll consider myself fortunate. It is too hard to find 68k Macs around here to lose one of my babies!

Huzzah! Porter's suggestion worked, and I am updating to NetBSD 4.0 now.
