Trouble Installing DaynaPort Drivers for RaSCSI

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up ethernet on my Mac SE using my RaSCSI and the instructions here: https://github.com/akuker/RASCSI/wiki/Dayna-Port-SCSI-Link

However, I'm having trouble getting the DaynaPort Drivers to work. When I try to unpack the linked .sit file, Stuffit quits immediately (tried on 3 and 4). Using the RaSCSI bootstrap hda, which has the .img file pre-unzipped, DropDisk quits immediately and Disk Copy 6.3.3 reports that the image is damaged and cannot be used (-8819). I've also found the drivers elsewhere (versions 7.7.2 and 7.5.3), which unzipped and started running fine, but they requested that I insert the installer disk, which I of course do not have. Any suggestions for what to look at next?

Have you checked that your bootstrap HDA has the proper hash, maybe there was a download issue? I was able to install from that onto my SE/30. Note that it was a ShrinkWrap 3.5 image. I just double-clicked and it opened up on my desktop. It doesn't work through DropDisk/Disk Copy.

Also, I have noticed a large number of .SIT files I'm finding on macintoshgarden have in fact required Stuffit 5 and just immediately quit with 4 like you mentioned. So install 5 if you can :)

I‘ve experienced errors with unpacking various sit files from the internet too. I think they are often packed with stuffit >= 5. So I unpacked the drivers on a second Macintosh with OS X Tiger and transferred it via Zip-Disks to the SE/30 - maybe this could be an option if you‘ve a Zip drive and disk at hand.

You could also upload a repacked file (mini vmac or basilisk) using the Rascsi web page and create a disk image from it. Or try uploading a disk image directly created and formatted by an emulator or a hfs utility application (they exist for Windows, Mac and Linux).

I seem to be having issues with the installer I found for 3.5 (crashes instead of doing anything), and 2.1 mounts the image but the system reports that it's not formatted as a Mac disk and needs to be formatted. Double clicking on the image gives me an error: "ShrinkWrap was unable to load a component needed to mount the disk image. The Component Manager may not be available. Error #-9405"

What option can I use on the web page to upload a file directly to an image? I can upload whole images, but I don't see an option for dynamically creating an image from a file, if that's what you mean

Ah I see - you’re right. But there is an option for uploading and creating a cd disk image that can be mounted - all you need is the cd drivers installed.

Otherwise use a blank drive image for mini vmac, copy the installer onto and upload the drive image using the rascsi web interface.

I was able to figure this out - the DaynaPort disk image was self-extracting and that only worked on System 7.5 and later. I talked to the owner of the RaSCSI bootstrap and he's added DiskCopy images that will work on earlier versions. In the end I just went ahead and set it up on 7.5, and it went completely smooth! Just pinged google.com which was really exciting :)

Great!

And thanks for the CD suggestion - I tried that out and that also works great! Super convenient way to get one-off files on to the Mac.

@rjkucia dragging up your March 2022 thread - how are you finding the RaSCSI and Daynaport emulation?

I've an SE/30 with PDS video card, I'd like ethernet and have a spare Raspberry Pi 3 B+ on hand - querying if others have found it reliable and working well in its current state of development.

Thanks

JB

Zero issues! The hardest part was figuring out the right settings for MacTCP, but I've upgraded my board to an SE/30 since and with OpenTransport it's a breeze.

Thanks, looks like I've a new project! I'm not great with figuring networking but sure I'll sort if out if the underlying software works reliably.

RaSCSI makes it super easy if you're at all familiar with Linux and general basic networking concepts (assigning IP addresses, and typing in configuration). And if you aren't, it's still easy enough to learn!

Definitely run into the .sit StuffIt 4/5 issue from time to time. I don’t believe that Stuffit 5 works with 68000 CPU either.

Very cool though to hear another working RaSCSI setup is working. I’ve also been considering giving it a try.
