Transferring SIT archives driving me crazy!!

I'm trying to get my IIci setup with an assortment of applications and games.  I generally download files to my NAS and then redownload them to my IIci (or SE/30) using Fetch over Ethernet.

While a lot of compressed files open up just fine this way, probably about 50% of them can't be opened by Stuffit.  The errors are either corrupt SIT archive, unexpected EOF, or unknown format.

I have versions 4.5 and 5.5 of Stuffit Expander installed.  Whenever I try to open an archive with version 5.5, it indicates that this version of StuffitExpander requires Stuffit Engine 5.0 or later which is installed with DropStuff + Expander Extras.  I haven't been able to uncompress any version of Dropstuff + Expander Extras with the Stuffit I have on my Mac.

My OS X Powerbook opens up these archives fine, as does whatever version of Stuffit I was able to put on my PowerMac G5.  I'm not sure if Stuffit changed formats with version 5 and some of the Stuffit version 5's out there are compressed with version 5 creating a catch-22 or not.  I'm trying to avoid using a helper Mac if I can so I don't need to have another machine setup and taking space.

Has anybody else had any issues with getting the full version of Stuffit Expander 5.5 with the updated engine installed?  Were there changes in the Stuffit archive format between 4.x and 5.x?

A lot of the later system software CDs from Apple included Stuffit in a non-compressed format. I know it was on OS9 CDs, maybe on OS8; not sure.  Worth a try if your target machine has a CD drive.
