The DuoDock Returns (w. some extra goodies).

About five years ago, I purchased an allegedly working Apple DuoDock from eBay in excellent condition. When it arrived, the top housing was cracked (seller later compensated for the damage), and it refused to power up even with a known working PowerBook Duo 230 I borrowed from my old high school. I would later sell the DuoDock as parts to JT on the Trading Post

Last week, I discovered that someone nearby my university campus was selling some vintage Apple stuff, and part of that set included a working DuoDock (with a Duo 230), an Apple Color OneScanner, and some Apple service manuals. So for $80, here's what I got:

Everything works at the moment, including the scanner. The only noticeable defects are the screen hinge on the 230 does not click shut, and the screen itself suffers from the typical ghosting problem. Sound is also a tad faint even at maximum volume, so a capacitor overhaul will be required in the near future. Here's a shot of the hinge:

I also obtained a mint condition VHS copy of "The Shocking Truth" (not pictured).

Playing around with the Color OneScanner on the DuoDock:

My intention is to replace my Visioneer PaperPort VX now that I have an "authentic" Apple scanner. The Visioneer works perfectly, and is in good shape for its age. I'm asking $5 + shipping if anyone wants it (cord and SCSI cable are included).

What you can now try is Hyperscan, a HyperCard scanner stack by Bill Atkinson himself. I think it still works with Apple's earlier colour scanners. It doesn't, alas, with my 1200/30, which was the last in the OneScanner series. It's supposed to be about a million times better implemented than most scanner software.

Started to tear apart the 230 to determine if any of the aluminum capacitors had leaked on the logic board. Fortunately, the board appears to be in very good shape despite showing symptoms of failing capacitors (i.e., low sound):

As mentioned in the first post, the screen suffers from ghosting and I have intentions of recapping the LCD board. However, I'm uncertain how to remove these screen covers. Any advice before I destroy the plastics?

I tried using a very thin jewellery screwdriver to pry off the cover. It's actually a sticker, and it won't budge at all. Apple stupidity at its finest.

Farted around with the 230 screen a little more. I gained access to the front LCD screws by removing the screen cover/stickers with my fingernails (muddled the top right corners of the covers, but that's the least of my worries at this point).

At this point, I'm seriously contemplating whether it is even worth the effort to salvage this thing. The logic board was easy to disassemble, but there's just too many small fasteners and clips holding the LCD together, and I know its going to be a royal PITA to reassemble this LCD.
