The Definitive Guide to Connecting your SE/30

Ok, again thank you for your informative reply!

Let me try to focus my needs, so that you need not give me a "global" response. Remember I am not an expert at these issues, like you are!

While I have some background in Computer Science back in my college days of mainframe computers, please treat me like an "end user" just trying to get this project to work.

My history with Macintosh's going back to 1985 always dealt with desktop File Sharing between Macs: first with TOPS and then starting with System 7, using one Mac as a non-dedicated file server for the other Macs to access here; and that is what I am attempting to get working; not FTP or other data transfer protocols.

The perfect solution for me would be for the SE/30 to "see" the MacMini2,1 Tiger as a File Sharing folder on its Desktop. That way I can use DiskCopy 6.3.3 to "mount" install disks located on the MacMini2,1 and then install programs, for example Aldus PageMaker 4.0 (4 install disks) on the SE/30 without having to first copy these install disks to the SE/30 and then delete them.

I will NOT use WiFi between the SE/30 and the MacMini2,1; I currently connect them through Farallon PhoneNet connectors and an ethernet cable with the PowerBook 1400 being used as a LocalTalk Bridge between the two.

You advise me to replace the PowerBook 1400 with an SE/30 Ethernet PDS card installed. I have tried to avoid this expense, as I am not interested in getting my SE/30 to work on the Internet. I did this on my original SE/30 about 20 years ago with the somewhat rare and expensive Micron XCEED 256 greys card piggybacked on an Ethernet card with PDS pass-through. To be honest, it was a fun task, a satisfying achievement, but then totally boring to browse the Internet with, so I sold off that SE/30 to recoup my investment.

This time around I just want to mount the MacMini2,1 "server" on the SE/30.

You say the best solution is still an SE/30 Ethernet PDS card. But I am reticent to spend the money on the Ethernet card and still discover that while my SE/30 "sees" the MacMini2,1 server in Chooser, it cannot successfully mount it.

While I consider this problem further, could you please explain to me what benefits are offered by installing ShareWay or SharePoints on my current system: Mac OS 7.5.3 with ASC 3.7.4 and OT 1.3 on my SE/30 to talk to OS X Tiger 10.4?

Thank you for your patience with me!
