TAM/6500/5500 - Does video upgrade to 1024x768 support Apple Video Player at that res?

Curious about that, Alchemy's 16" MaxRes doesn't, but its VGA 800x600 supports it in a window IIRC? TAM does, no?

Gazelle's 1024x768, another VGA, standard, might be different story? I'd think it ought to support AVP in a window or even at full screen on the TAM's feature wish list had they managed to wrangle a better LCD in that time frame.

But you know . . . Apple.

It works in a window on my 5500 when set to 1024x768 (max 16-bit).

At 832x624 it works in 16-bit but only generates a gray-green window in 24-bit.
At 800x600 it works in both 16 and 24-bit, but the video quality is noticeably worse in 24-bit.
At 640x480 it's identical in 16 and 24-bit, and supports full screen mode.

On the TAM it can run in a window at 800x600 or "full screen" at 640x480, but since the display doesn't support scaling the unused area is just black. It's still slightly more immersive than running in a window, but the video displayed is the same size as largest option in windowed mode.

Thanks much. IIRC, the Quadra 630 DrawerMac Hardware/AVP system only pipes 16bit output directly into that window, so don't go to 24bit. Doing a screen cap with AVP running shows the window as blank on the desktop from video buffer contents. ISTR it being blue?

You can have some fun with screenshots while the video system is still active.


Doubling the screenshot size basically works, but produces a slight pattern which doesn't appear 1:1. Screensavers that show the desktop are also fun

I was surprised 1024x768@60Hz worked too. I don't think it's in the 'Recommended' list of resolutions (it asks to confirm when selected.) 70Hz is also listed but only produces a black screen. It's noticeably less sharp than the tray load iMac display, but it's usable and a nice feature to have. My first machine was a 5200, so this one's luxurious by comparison.

Since Analog OTA TV has been dead and gone since 2009, I'm assuming you're using one of the following to get that working:

• DTV converter box with analog coax output
• Satellite receiver or cable box with analog coax output
• A VCR playing a tape recording of an old analog signal

Anyway, it's nice that it can still be good for something, and the on screen results aren't terrible.

Works great with composite analog outputs on pre-HDMI DVD Players as well.

Since Analog OTA TV has been dead and gone since 2009, I'm assuming you're using one of the following to get that working:

• DTV converter box with analog coax output
• Satellite receiver or cable box with analog coax output
• A VCR playing a tape recording of an old analog signal

Anyway, it's nice that it can still be good for something, and the on screen results aren't terrible.

Our old DirecTV set top box included UHF coax out, but the new Dish one didn’t so I added an RF modulator to its composite out.

My grandmother wanted a house of televisions but only one monthly surcharge, so the modulator coax is looped throughout the house for SD quality satellite channels, and a second bunch of cables send ATSC air signal to the Dish set top box as well as directly to the secondary tuners on the remote televisions (I love all the inputs on transition-era HDTVs.)

I could probably replace this with a series of HDMI baluns for better quality, but then the analogue sets would need adapting.

Somewhere in storage I have a stack of ATSC tuners and a stack of full spectrum UHF modulators I’ve meant to tie together to restore full functionality to the analogue tuners. Flipping through channels feels more authentic without delay.
