SSD Solution For 5500

Sweet I'll go ahead and grab that at least it is a known quantity. I do have a 6500 so I can verify my stuff against that but it's just a pain to open it. :(
Actually the drive in my 6500 has died which is why I use my 5500 so heavily much much easier to access stuff. But this is good stuff keep it coming!

I’m still using a spinning drive in my 5500, but I’ve had good success running a CF-IDE and a 128GB SanDisk Extreme CF card on the TAM’s built-in IDE. In theory the two aren’t dissimilar.

I use a Hyperspec disk on module in my 5400, it's been rock solid for about 2 years now. I've also tried a Silicon Image PCI SATA combo card to run a proper SSD, but it became unstable I suspect due to low power output from the analog board. The latter could perhaps be an issue to look in to on your machine. I would also check wiring for any evidence of shorting or other problems.

So far so good with the new compact flash card in my 6500. I cracked it all the way open to make it easier to work on what a pain. But there is a lot more room in the case than I thought. The zip bay appears to have room for a second optical drive even. I wonder why nobody ever made a bezel for optical on top….

Anyhow we’ll see if it boots after install. While I have it open I’m going to test the rest of my pile as well I’m the 6500 and report back.

Looks promising!

That's basically my dad's Quadra 630 setup in terms of the disk.

My Performa 630s just have IDE spinning disks in them still at the moment.

Ok so new install disk sourced and was able to install and boot 9.1 from both compact flash cards I ordered using the star tech adapter.

On to the next gadget! Once I have figured out what works and doesn’t in the 6500 I’ll switch to the 5500.

I'm apparently not the first to have this thought! Not an official bezel but goodness his work came out nice. Makes me think I probably could just do my own square zip bezel as well with the blank one and not fuss with finding a real one. https://www.applefritter.com/node/18510

Sorry got side tracked here but dang that looks nice.

I think you could do the same thing that he did for the optical with the full zip bezel like this rare full opening option bezel but just flush.

Alright back to regular programming, just got my wheels turning those zip bezels are a pain to find so this might be just the ticket for folks.

Looking at the side panel, I'm wondering if he had access to a CNC Mill, or lots of patience.

Success again! In the 6500 at least the impulse buy ide to sd adapter I snagged when buying the compact flash adapter allowed 9.1 from scratch install and boot as well. Grabbed a 64GB card I use with the Zulu for it and boom! Now that’s a proper drive. Next test coming up!

If you read the thread I linked he said he used a dremel to make the big hole area then fine tuned it with a file to get an exact fit... Lots of patience and care.. But honestly, I bet you could just get it laser cut if you had someone local turn them out easy. Really looks nice despite not having the bevel around it.

Yeah, most stuff I've made for my old computers has been angle grinder and a file, you can do quite neat work if you make a template and take care.

Alright so here's the verdict:

Startech Compact Flash Adapter with Both 4GB and 16GB cards worked perfect in both 6500 and 5500.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BYY3162?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - 16GB
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009X3MNU?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 - 4GB
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0026OYEEQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - Compact Flash Adapter

Weird generic ide to sd card adapter that looks very similar to the compact flash adapter also worked, with a 64GB Sandisk drive.

Then I also tried my old msata to 44pin IDE adapter again. And suprisingly it worked! 120GB drive all wonderful. But I was curious and couldn't leave it alone and decided to try that msata drive in my sata to IDE OWC adapter to see if the drive made a difference. It did not machine wouldn't boot etc. And now when I put the msata back into the msata to IDE adapter I have drive issues, doesn't want to initialize throwing all kinds of errors etc. But it was awesome for a minute, I've tried fixing the drive with both my modern mac and disk utilities on my quick silver with no luck. So I ordered some more msata drives to try because I just can't freaking leave it alone. Good news is though that I have two solutions so far that work in both machines!

mSata won't work in a system that old, random errors like that are exactly what will happen. Either that or it just won't be detected, but you've gotten the former.

Are you sure? Doesn't it depend on the drive and adapter model? I thought some people did this.

Note don't use the beige G3 as a basis for this sort of thing, the beige g3 ide has more quirks than... a quirky thing covered in quirk sauce, with a quirk stuck in it served on a quirk, with a side of quirks.

I believe it does depend on the adapter, specifically what ATA/IDE transfer modes it supports.

I'm fairly certain that all of the PCI architecture Macs that used IDE support drives up to PIO4 16.7MB/s with the B&W G3 adding UDMA 2 ("UDMA/33") 33.3MB/s and G4's eventually supporting even faster modes.

But the adapters sometime don't support the oldest/slowest transfer modes. I used this model adapter, which does PIO4 16.7MB/s and up:

It works just fine in my Performa 6360/PB3400 but no dice in my Quadra 630/PB1400 which only support up to PIO 2 8.3MB/s. Use compact flash in those.
