SilverLining Light on a Mac Plus?

Some background..

For the past few weeks I've been tinkering with a Mac Plus I found in a back alley somewhere near my work. I've managed to get System 6.0.8 installed on it, the "necessary" applications (NCSA Telnet, Fetch FTP, various tools for decompressing/converting .hqx/.bin/.sit files, etc.). I've even managed to get it online with an Adaptec EN/SC unit (which I originally had for my PB 165c), and it pokes along quite nicely!

I had an old dual enclosure and popped a 50MB SCSI HD and SCSI ZIP 100 in it, and I now have "oodles" of external storage. [:D] ]'> I even lucked out and found an external 800K floppy, which was a godsend since the eject didn't work on the internal one.

The problem..

Years ago I purchased SilverLining 5.8.3, which included SilverLining Light 2.1. Now, the system requirements state System 6.0.7 and above, and any Macintosh, and a 1.4MB HD floppy drive. My Mac Plus obviously didn't come with an HD drive, but 6.0.8 should work. And SilverLining itself works flawlessly.

I'm trying to install the control panel. I'm new to the way System 6 works with control panels (are these "CDEV"s?), and I just dropped it in my System Folder. In the Control Panels window it shows up in the list on the left, but when I click it it chugs away for a bit, populates the pane on the right, and then freezes my computer.

Has anybody had any luck with the SilverLining Light control panel? I need it so that I can install ZIP drivers if required (and format ZIP disks!).

Thanks for any input.

I don't know the Silverlining 5.8.3/Lite 2.2.1 duumvirate, but I use Silverlining 5.8.4/Lite 2.2.2. I can't imagine that they are poles away from your versions. Lite 2.2.x has the control panel and GUI that 5.8.x does not, and which all versions 6.x.x do.

I suspect that 2.2.x asks the questions and shows the answers, and 5.8.x does the work. Silverlining 2.2.x and 6.x.x are apps placed in the Control Panels Folder within the System Folder of vv.7.x and later systems, for convenient access as well as automated loading. However, there is no Control Panels Folder in System 6.0.8.

I just fired up my 512Ke/2MB with HD20 to check its modus operandi in this matter. Of 13 Control Panel documents listed (use By Kind in the View menu to sort the contents of the System Folder), only seven appeared in the left pane of the Control Panel.

I should have expected (if you placed both 5.8.3 and 2.2.1 in the System Folder) that the Silverlining components would show as applications in the sorted list, and neither in the Control Panel. Mebbe 2.2.1 is enabled so, as the non-native SAM, SuperClock and Møire cdev are in my case. What may, however, give you more satisfaction is to open 2.2.1 directly from within the System Folder, and let it find its running mate 5.8.3 by itself, as long as the latter is indeed in the System Folder.

I cannot be more help than this at the moment because my overgrown floppy disk, the HD20, does not have any need of Silverlining. I do use 2.2.2/5.8.4 on a Classic, but that is on the shelf rather than on the bench at the moment. Do post back, if you choose, with your progress.

Could be wrong, but I remember something about a handy program called Conflict Catcher which was sometimes useful in situations like this before the Extensions Manager existed. It seems there are many inits, cdevs and extensions that are not quite compatible, and the success of some even depends on the order of installation. Hence the modern admonitions of disabling all extensions before loading, and the various tricks of adding a name prefix to change load order, I think. (I always love it when I boot with the shift key and then can't find the CDROM drive anymore.) If you can temporarly disable the many other non-Apple 6.0.8 additions you have made, you may find the control panel in question works, and may continue to work when the others are re-enabled.
