Setting up SCSI2SD on 68030 (Color Classic) and drive size limitations

Hello!

I've had pretty good results with setting up and using SCSI2SD on various 68040 based systems (eg: Performa 578, Quadra 650) where I've configured SCSI2SD using a 8GB SD card with 4x 2GB HFS partitions. With that setup, I'm able to install/boot/use various OS versions (7.1, 7.5.5, 8.1) ok.

However when using a 68030 based system (eg: Color Classic, SE/30), I believe there's some limitation of 2GB total for the drive size, not just the partition - for example, when I try to use that same 8GB SD card with with 4x 2GB HFS partitions, it won't recognize it or boot off it. I am able to use a 2GB SD card setup with a single 2GB HFS partition ok though.

I see info related to this on posts like these, but it's not clear (to me at least) there's this 2GB drive size limitation vs the partition size.

So is that the case with 68030 based systems?  Should I instead be setting the SCSI2SD card up, using a 8GB SD card, as 4 separate devices, each 2GB (for example)?

Thanks!

Four separate devices at a bit less that 2 Gigs each is how I set the devices up. I use SCSI IDs 1-4 and leave ID 0 open for an Internal hard drive. Using a V5.5 SCSI2SD I've been able to boot any classic mac I have that has a SCSI port on the back. The only other SCSI device that I have and use is an Akai sampler that has an internal ID of 6 and wants it's HD (if it ever gets one) to be set to ID 5. So, the use of IDs 1-4 is really a non issue for me.  I have not tried to set it up the other way (partitioning one large drive into smaller volumes) and cannot comment on that.

I've booted: SE, SE/30, IIci, Classic II, and Quadra 700 from the SCSI2SD set up this way.

I set up my scsi2sd v5.5 to emulate one 1.5gb hard drive on ID 5. I use separate micro SD cards for each of my currently working 68K Macs.  One card is a 2gb and the other is 8gb.  When I format them in the patched version of HD SC setup, they show up as 1.5gb drives due to the scsi2sd’s configuration.

Thanks all - I just ended up setting it up with 4 separate SCSI devices, 2GB each. It works ok, though I needed to initialize them with Drive Setup instead of Apple HD SC Setup since the latter was taking WAY too long to verify after initialization.

You can also use Lido. It's super quick as it doesn't verify the format. It will also format most any drive.
