SE/30 with Carrying Case and non working Display

Just picked up a SE/30 here in the UK with a Burgundy Mac carrying case. System was sold as not working.  Came complete with ADB keyboard and mouse and a couple of manuals.

Having taken an initial look the system powers on, chimes, and I can hear hard disk activity.   There is however no screen.

I opened up and when I tried to ground the high voltage I got no spark, so I am thinking the Analog board is the place to start.  There is a pattern of reside across the inside top of the case and the top of the CRT seems to have a black residue -I have done a little cleaning with IPA and the stuff is really black!

The Logic board looks good, I think the capacitors will need to be replaced but are not a priority for now.  I looked at the memory slots and there seems to be a mixture, some have plastic clips but there are 4 with metal clips - I suspect these may have been replaced at some point.

The HDD is a Quantum ProDrive LPS which sounds healthy and makes all the fight noises one startup.

This is my first foray into classic Macs so any advice on the dead display would be appreciated.  I have attached some photos to try and show what I am talking about.

Firstly, welcome to the forum. Secondly, well done on acquiring this - I was also watching this one on eBay and was close to bidding.

Black dirt in these is common, it just means it was turned on for long periods and has never been cleaned, it was possibly used in a factory/workshop.

Have you reseated all the components on the analog board? If the video board on the CRT neck is loose/not seated correctly, that will also result in no video.

Can you re-upload the pictures as a jpeg or something?  They're a .heic which PCs don't get along with

I am intrigued about the mix of ram slots - some with metal tabs and some with plastic.

It was someone's university machine - I may have some docs to give back to them if I can get it working!!

I've stripped down the machine, removed the gooseneck, motherboard and reseated them afterwards.  Still no display.

Next time I will remove power supply and analog board and have a close visual inspection.

Christmas duties tomorrow and beyond will take priority

Here are some JPEGs...

Ram slots 4 with metal clips and 4 plastic:

4 x 1MB (large) and 4 smaller modules like these:

Some capacitor shots - they will get replaced but look ok visually:

Lots of crud on Fan and inside of case, top of display is black when cleaned with IPA:

I found a battery coded 10 89 which I am guessing may be October 1989 which was intact:

All in all a pretty tidy machine - 2 manuals and a burgundy carrying bag.

The problem with that is that the forum won't display them inline or know what to do with them, so it's still something of a pain.  You'll generally get people paying more attention / being more helpful if you post images as JPEGs :) .

edit: sorry for the double post, thought I was editing.
See above - good point, there is also a low quality startup vid.

I’m sure you already did, but did you check that both the brightness knob on the front bottom edge as well as the cutoff adjustment on the analog board are set at decent levels?

Adjusted the cutoff and desoldered J1, Flyback, C15 and L1 now I have a horizontal line.  Its a start but not sure where to go next?

Thanks to everyone for suggestions.  Will post some more photos later.

First off the logic board has to be recapped, and cleaned. the 74LS166 could be defective as well.

Second, troubleshooting help should be in the compact mac forum.

and Third, HEIC files need to die a horrible firey death. That is starting a whole 'nother format/compatibility war again. I dont use the latest and greatest software, so not even the Microsoft patch linked above works. Jpegs please. (At least you did post jpegs)

Recap is planned, but I would like to see the display working first - and yes there is a thread in the classic forums...
