SE/30 SIMM Sockets

Hey gang.. anyone have experience replacing the good ole plastic SIMM sockets with good new metal clip SIMM sockets? I attempted on one with my new solder iron with suction pump. If you don’t have one of these I highly recommend them!! No more ruining througholes for me!

At any rate I did buy some 30 pin sockets off eBay but it just so happens they are off by a bit in the pins and plastic mounting guides.

I realize this is quite the undertaking but it would be nice to have the metal ones.. inserting improperly back into the unit with large 16mb simms break the plastic tabs. I wish apple forked out the money at the time for the metal ones.. cheap as usual.

Anyone with any positive thoughts besides not doing it or using hot glue gun to hold in place.. I’d like decent sockets.

Here’s some photos.. I did damage some througholes but I managed to fix them.

By the way PIN number 9 from both sides going inward are soldered to the rail and I have no idea how to desolder… they are in there hard! I was going to try heat gun but then I found the sockets don’t fit.. should have checked before.. (they looked exactly the same.

I hope this post helps anyone who is thinking of doing this as to what’s involved and perhaps not to try..

NIGHT STALKER
Tangential, but maybe something to consider:

If you've got bad sockets and want to max an SE/30 out with 128MB worth of SIMMs there might be a better way? I've got a broken plastic poo socket in my board as well. Haven't got the pic readily available, but @Bolle soldered 128 MB worth of SIMMs directly into the thruholes of excised SIMM sockets.

If someone does a new SIMM design that implements right angle headers in place of edgecard teeth, an SE/30 could be proofed against the inevitable failure of plastic poo. When the plasticizers leach out of such SIMM sockets, a good bump or even a puff dustoff will set off the domino effect.
