SE/30 OS Install problems

Hey everyone, I'm working on installing mac os onto my SE/30 using a floppy emu and a HD emulated via a SCSI2SD. ROM is a custom rom but is taken from the rom supplied by bigmessowires.com.

Here's what's happening... Installation of 7.1 works as expected using the floppies, i'm able to boot from the install floppies and reboot into macOS once it's installed without any issues. When I run the installer for 7.5.3, installation begins but when it ejects the first install disk and then requests the second, it pops up again and asks for install disk 1. This continues for a while until it gives up and cancels the installation. I followed the instructions for modifying the disk tools disk to include whichiwere to install 7.6.1 but when I try and boot to that disk, floppy emu says it is stopped on sector 23 and the mac is continually reading but not moving.

Has anyone ran into any of these problems? The logic board doesn't have any issues, it's been recapped and verified by a very trusted source so I know it's ok.

Thoughts anyone?

Yes, Anything above 7.1 on Rominator needs edits done to the system folder in order to boot. More details here.

Edit; I never tried to install via FloppyEMU. Are you booting from the floppy EMU to do the instalation or from the SCSI2SD 7.1?

Hi @BacioiuC, yes i've been following the instructions on that page however there seems to be some issues i'm running into using the instructions. I tried to install 7.6.1 but i'm running into some issues when the installation finishes where it's telling me immediately that it cant run on my model. WishIWere is installed in the system folder but it's not getting to that point. I'd love to install 8.1 on it, I have a 68040 accelerator and 128mb ram installed so as far as resouces go, i'm maxed out.

Are you sure you're installing the OS for all macintosh models, not just a specific one? I'm running 8.1 on my 040 CCII and I was running it on my 040 SE/30 before without any issues. I had a similar problem as you when I installed it specifically for another mac but WishIWere was set for Q700.

if it installs okay and at the end it's telling you that, try to start with Extensions Off to disable WishIWere on boot, just to be sure.

Edit: Can you boot from ROM btw? After I installed 8/8.1, I'd boot from the Rominator rom at startup and do the ResEdit hacks like that.

Yes, I am. When I did the 7.1 installation I selected universal install for all macintosh platforms. When I ran the 7.6.1 installer, I did what it mentioned in the document. Start WishIWere and set it to Macintosh IISI and rebooted, that allowed the 7.6.1 installer to go through without erroring out. For the installation, I did express install with the clean install option selected. When the install finished, booted into ROM and used resedit to check the file that was mentioned to be changed but the change from 03 over to 05 was already there so I didn't change it.

During boot it's not even getting to the boot screen to load the WishIWere extension, it just stops immediately and says this boot disk is not for your model.

Something is clearly wrong there to be honest. I never used the IISI as my model, I just go with Quadra 700. Try and do a clean install, 7.1 and then go for your target using Quadra 700. I also never installed 7.6.1 so no idea on this part. I usually went 7.1 -> 8.0 -> 8.1. Are you sure you performed a “Clean Install” and “Easy Install”? I think Clean Install only appears if you press COMMAND SHIFT k in the installer.

Make sure 7.6.1/8.0/8.1 has the option for ANY MACINTOSH. Doesn't matter if the previous system was installed for ANY MACINTOSH. A clean install moves and de-blesses the previous install folder.

Ok so after a lot of messing around and copying of files I finally was able to get OS 8 installed. Found a lot of problems with the scsi2sd in which it very much does not like having a second device configured and caused issues (yes, the active terminator setting is checked). Now that I have the OS installed I tried to get my carrera040 working again by coping the extension and control panel to the system folder only to reboot and have it say "illegal instruction" which i was not expecting. Has anyone come across this issue after installing or upgrading to OS 8/8.1?

Yes, it's the main reason why I am not using 8/8.1 with my Carrera040. I had aaaa lot of problems with it and the carrera. It can go for a little while with extensions off but about 10 minutes in it crashes with a Illegal Instruction. I have no idea how @omgmonsters got his se/30 and the carrera040 to play nice on 8.1.

I loaded macsbug onto my mac to see what was going on while its loading the "startup carrera" extension, here's what i'm seeing...

Illegal instruction at 0028847E 'FOND 3FFF 017A Chicago'

Anyone know what this means?

This means someone told the processor to start executing code inside a FOND resource (font data) as if it were a CODE resource …. Which it is not! The Carrera extension is going haywire. Sorry that’s unhelpful …

UPDATE: it lives :)

Looks like the startup extension doesnt like running on OS 8 but is perfectly happy running on OS 8.1. The CPU is running at 27 MHz though which is concerning. I wonder if the 20MHz oscillator somehow is not working.
