SE/30 memory problem.

I have a SE/30 recently recapped from a very good technician.If had 5mb of ram (4x256 and 4x1mb).I have changed the brand new modules(4x4mb-60ns) from the IIci to SE/30.I have putted on the first bank(A bank).Machine does not boot and had stripes on monitor and the sound of death.

Then I have install them to bank B and install the 4x256kb to bank A.Shows me only 2Mb ram...

Also I have a Seagate 2gb hard disk the finder can’t see it properly...

My motherboard -recently recapped- and my modules.First bank has 4 modules 256kb each second bank modules 4mb.I think the problem is the modules.They have only 2 chips per module.As a result my SE/30 sees only 2mb of ram.

I have successfully used 2-chip 4MB and even 2-chip 16MB SIMMs in many SE/30s before.

Do you have another set of 4MB SIMMs that you could try just to make sure it is not an issue with one of the address lines going to the SIMM slots or a bad contact on one of the slots.

That's strange that the 1MB modules in bank A, and the 256k modules in bank B would give you a death chime...
That's the proper install :/

As I said before,I had 5mb with 4x1mb and 4x256k and machine worked fine.

The 256k modules are in front(A bank) and 4mb modules in the back.

Maybe I will try with another modules.

Do you mean that each of your 1 MB SIMMs have different chip configurations? It might help to have photos of all of the 30-pin modules you have, and if you can, the names (close-ups) of the individual silicon for each one.

I haven't tried on an SE/30, but my Macintosh Plus had mixed modules. The SE/30 might have less tolerance for mixed chips.

At the very least, all the SIMMs in each bank must be the same speed (example 80ns, 70ns or 60ns), as far as I know. I mean, I'm not sure it's going to hurt anything. At worst, you'll have a death chime.

I've just installed 8mb ram and I will run 7.1.

If I install over 16mb ram and 7.5.5 the SE/30 will be any faster or not?

I want you opinion please for amount of ram.

Here's my opinion:

I think it depends on what you want to run. Many programs of the era do just fine with 1-8 MB, some might need a bit more.

In order to even use more than 8 MB, you'll need to enable 32-bit addressing via a new ROM (MacSIMM; ROMinator; etc.) or with the MODE32 extension. Without it your excess RAM will show up as being used by the system software, and not accessible for any programs.

System 7.5.5 I feel would be pretty slow on an 030 machine, reagardless of RAM. Unless it's sporting a PowerCache or Turbo040 or something like that. I'm planning on keeping 7.1.1/2 for myself. I have 32 MB currently, and I doubt I'll hit that ceiling until I get an exceed and try to use Photoshop. That said, you can use some older versions of Photoshop with less than 32 MB, that was just an example.

Some people go to the max with 128 MB for the bling factor. I'd be interested to see an SE/30 actually utilizing that amount

As far as 7.5.5 on 030, my IIfx with 24 MB RAM is perfectly usable, and works very well. It's not a SE/30, but the /30 is pretty speedy even next to the IIfx. I, also, have no plans for 128 MB. I'd like 64, but that's it. Unless you need some sort of exotic programs running simultaneously on there, I don't see the point.

Thanks guys.At the moment I will stick with 8mb and 7.1 as operating system because 7.5.3 feels a bit slow.
