Hi all.
just thought i'd drop an update.
I removed the RTC chip and D1 & D2. gave the area another clean and tested the diodes out of circuit and all good I was confident the diodes were fine from my testing, but i thought i'd lift them and clean the area again anyway. put them back in. I then fitted a socket and picked up a couple of NOS clock chips and a new ATTinyRTC. it became clear it was the RTC because i had continuity on all pins back to the via and the crystal. The machine is currently using a NOS chip, but all is functioning happily. Thanks
