Rise of the Fallen Soldier...

but it doesn't matter, the 6100 has 8MB of onboard RAM
OMG, I forgot about that. DOH!

Do you hear the fan turn on in the power supply when you turn on the Mac? I notice in your picture that the speaker is connected. Hmmm... I can't think of many things left to try except inserting a ROM SIMM. :p

The more I think about this, the more I realize how rusty I've gotten. Maybe 6100s DO need ROM SIMMs. I'm not completely sure anymore. For some reason before, I was absolutely positive that they didn't need them. Now we need to get to the bottom of this.

I'm still convinced there's supposed to be a ROM SIMM in one of those slots.
You're right. I just saw it in the Apple Service Manual. I have no recollection of any ROM SIMM in any of my 6100s. I feel very filthy from this, the 6100 was my first real Mac. I have betrayed it.

Lack of the SIMM is probably why they don't boot. That is so strange. There were not many Macs that relied on a ROM SIMM.

Apart from that little issue, the machines check out fine. Power supply works and is healthy, humming is audible through earbuds (so the logic board is getting power, for sure). They just don't go any further. It's a shame really, even more-so if I could have connected a DB-15 monitor to the AV card and used it as the primary display (optimistic, but usually never that simple). It would have been nice to boot up Copland on this with the Centris debugging.

I'm not sure i'll end up tracking down a ROM SIMM for these. I have other machines to attend to as well (the iBook needs a new display bezel still) and as it stands, I have to conserve just about every cent I can get, so I won't be having one shipped over any time soon.

Does anyone know the part number of this ROM SIMM? I parted out a 6100 a while ago and likely have one available.

I would ask in the Trading Post here, and also ask Mike Richardson. You can find him at mc68000.org. I bet he has a couple dead 6100s that he could pull from. From my experiences with him, he is very reasonable with reasonable people.

Also check eBay, they look to be selling for about $10. Make sure to do your research so you know exactly what the SIMM looks like. People will often times misidentify these things. Here were my search terms:

(ROM, Cache) (Apple, Mac*) -cd -"cd-rom" -dvd -"dvd-rom"

Then just look through and find the correct ROM SIMM(s) by looking only at the pictures.
