I know theres only so much one can do about thermals but mm anyway..

just wondering if a newer hdd would had been any improvement (as I know that sometimes when I compare scsi specs it seem like eg this extra-old drive needs 10.7w while the less-old drive of same capacity only needs 9.2w etc) or is the factory 40gb that was in the ibook perhaps as good as they could get and the only actual improvement at this point is re doing some kind of solid storage drive instead?

If getting a replacement spinning drive, just go for the newest latest fastest drive you can find, which typically run cooler than any stock HD and more reliable than a ~ 15 yr unit.
