quicktime and dvds

I assume correctly that you need at least quicktime 6 minimum to be able to watch retail movies?

as far as I can find out a quicktime 5 manual points to that only mpeg-1 was licensed so dvds with their mpeg-2 codec could not be played but would likely appear in future version
(even then I don't know if maybe a third party plugin did eventually add it to pre-v6? I only know of perian which is a bit too 'new' for pre-osx)

I don't believe QuickTime (Player, at least) itself plays DVDs, but I may be wrong and/or some of the third party software may have been an add-on into QuickTime player itself.

On a Mac OS 9 system with DVD hardware (PowerBook G3, for example) there's a DVD player application separate from QuickTime player. Use whatever version of QuickTime came with the OS or newer.
