QS 2002 and DA PCI slots query

Are there any differences between the Quicksilver 2002 and Digital Audio PCI slots or the handling of them?

I ask because a Sil3512 based SATA card flashed with wibetech firmware works and is usable in my Digital Audio but no matter what I do wrt CUDA reset, slot swapping/reseating, etc I cannot seem to get the QS to go beyond a chime.

The DA works just fine with the card.

The QS chimes and stops. No video(black screen), no other sounds, just chime.

The QS and DA both work ok with a NEC based USB card I have as well.

Any ideas?

Also, looks like the macgurus.com forum has a few posts on this sort of situation with a few SATA cards and the issue is pinned on either Apple or Silicon Image's chips.

Damn this post edit time limit!

Anyway.

Seems that I should either stick with the Digital Audio or try another SATA card. :(

This kinda sucks.(not that I spent all that much on the SATA card) Was all excited about large drive support on the onboard PATA and finally having a real G4 case to play with. ...Unless I put my DA board in it or something... [possible evil smilie]

Pretty torn between the ATX case the DA is in and the stock QS case. Each has their advantages and disadvantages and I am having trouble deciding what one I want to use as a primary case even though in the past I have been pretty much all for ATX over stock Apple.

Has the QS its original (at release) software? That is, 10.1.2/9.2.2. Is your problem confined to OS 9 environment? Large drive support under OS 9 should be present, but you can check by looking in System Folder for the version numbers of Mac OS ROM (10.2.1) and the three Classic support modules Classic (9.5.0), Classic Support (2.2.1) and Classic Support UI (2.2.1). Without that ROM-in-RAM version the System knows nowt about 48-bit LBA and drives of more than 128GB (real), regardless of a PCI card. I've never used 10.1.x on my MDDs—only 10.4.x—so I have no idea how it behaves with large ATA drives mediated by the on-board controllers. However, a drive of 190GB remains the limit for OS 9 to address (by other than FireWire), as also is 1.5GB of RAM a limit.

Mac OS ROM 10.2.1 came on the G4 (machine-specific, grey) Install CD, but is otherwise hard to find. It may be different now, but I could never find it on Apple's site when I was looking, so you may need to chum up with someone to get it. You may also find it useful to brush up on the difference between CUDA and PMU resets by trawling these forums. Misusing the PMU as if it were a CUDA has a good chance of not resetting your MLB when you need to do so.

This has nothing to do with the onboard PATA or OS. I do not really even want to use OS 9 on it. 10.4/10.5 is what I desire on the QS.

This has to do with the QS not continuing much past it's boot chime with the SATA card installed. It does not even try to use the display.

The DA however likes the SATA card just fine. :/ (and they both like other PCI cards)

'Nothing to do with it' may not be on target if your lack is the correct firmware version for the newer G4. The DA requires 4.2.8f1. The QS in all likelihood needs 4.4.8f2, and OS 9 to install it. It's worth your investigation.

I followed this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939

Unless Apple is being typical Apple and denying the existence of things again, the 2002 QS needs no firmware update.

The Quicksilver 2002 has 4.3.3f2 at the moment.

The Digital Audio has 4.2.8f1.

*Edit

In the event that it clears things up, I am not having problems with large drives on the internal PATA. In fact I have not even tested it yet. I was just saying that I was excited about having it at first and was now disappointed because if this SATA card does not work in the QS I have no reason to use the QS board over the DA board.

Aside from being able to use larger drives without partitioning and/or OF workarounds or extra drivers, the bare QS and DA boards have pretty much the same thing to offer me.
