Hi All,

I have found on the internet and in a thread on this forum bezels for the 8100 for the CD-ROM and the Blank.  I had a CD-ROM bezel made and it works perfectly.  I just need to match the color and paint it.  Does anyone know if there is a floppy Bezel available for 3D printing?  I have been unable to find one and my bezel has broken latches, of course.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip but I actually searched the forums before posting and found, blank, cd-rom and Jaz drive bezels.  No floppy bezel yet.  If anyone knows of one I am sure people would use it as these things disintegrate just looking at them

Any ideas on obtaining paint to match Apple platinum?  I have some scraps on the metal enclosure part of my AppleCD 600e and some scratches on a Centris 650 that I'd like to touch up.

Not sure I'd get close to finding something that would work at Lowes...

Thanks for finding that for me, this looks like it:

Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Matte Perfect Gray Spray Paint 12oz

I also found Mac128 posted this in a "I want to do this..." thread in "Hacks & Development":

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=866

"Apple does not normally use PMS color charts or Pantone color numbers to designate the platinum color that is now the company standard. Our platinum color number on a coded PMS chart is somewhere between 420 and 421, somewhat closer to 421. (This depends on the age of the chart and the light source used for viewing it."

This site apparently lets you order spray paint, paint cans, and touch up paint pens in the Pantone colors.

Might order a those in touch up paint pens and see how close they are.

I haven't tried to paint any metal parts with it, but using that aforementioned spraypaint on my 3d printed parts resulted in a pretty close match to the paint on the metal case of my 9500. It wasn't exactly the same (maybe just a hair too light), so it might be fine for little tiny touchups, but I'd test it on something you don't care about before laying on a ton of it.painted9500bezels.jpg

annoyingly it doesn't match the original plastic at all, but that's just how it is.

If i get some time i'll try to make a bezel for the floppy drive. My biggest hurdle is all my floppy bezels are intact and I'm worried that if i take one off to measure it, I will end up breaking it. I should be able to measure all the things I need without taking it off though.

Could you remove and retrobrite the front of panel of the 9500?  I was able to do that for my Centris 650 and the plastic now pretty closely matches the metal. I did take out CD bezel on the C650, pressing tabs, etc. I can see how you might not want to risk that if the plastic is too brittle.

The only problem as far as I know is the RF shielding is permanently (well removing it would be more or less permanent) attached to the inside of the panel, so doing a full body retrobrite immersion is out of the question unless you want to take that off. I suppose the paste style retrobrite is always an option, but I haven't tried it, mostly because i'm worried i'd do it wrong and leave blotches.

There's also the general brittleness of pretty much all the plastic in these things, so taking it apart to that point might be risking breaking something important on accident.

Turned out to not be a whole lot of work, so here's a Quarda 800/840av Powermac 8100/8500/9500 etc floppy bezel!  I haven't actually tried it on any of my machines (all my floppy bezels are intact), so I can't guarantee that it will actually line up with the floppy drive 100%. As far as I can tell with my measurements it should be (at the very least) close enough, but just be aware that you might be wasting time/plastic/money if I made a mistake somewhere.

But anyway, good luck and hopefully this helps!

Wow, that looks awesome.  I will have one made and try it out.  All of the bezels on my 8100 are toast.  Even my blank that was perfect just recently broke when I moved the dumb thing.

Thanks!!

Ok Floppy bezel ordered and received from ShapeWays and it is a perfect fit on a PM8100.  Awesome work!

I also updated the 3d parts thread.

Thanks for doing this.   :b&w:

Not a problem at all! I had the bezel pretty much modeled anyway, so adding the floppy features wasn't too much work. I'm just glad Glad it fits - thanks for being the guinea pig!
