I picked up a 210 at a thrift store recently and i wad delighted that it worked perfectly, however as i was using it the entire screen froze, after leaving it for a few minutes with no response i restarted the machine using the keyboard, after which i got a happy mac followed by the screen flashing and then a blinking question mark. The hard disk is an IBM 40 meg type and i can hear the head/s moving when it attempts to boot and then… nothing, the disk keeps spinning but clearly no activity. Could this be capacitors? Or is this like drive related?

The boot files got corrupted. You can fix this with a disk tools disk. Do you have a dock with a floppy port/floppy drive?
