Just wondering...what computer would a performa 6200 compare to? Then what can I do to make OS 9.1 faster? I removed extensions and control panels... Then, I'd like to know which web browser would be fastish and compatible? I tried mozilla, IE 5, icab.... Mozilla seems to be compatible...but it takes about 60 seconds just to open.... IE 5 opens fast and works with most pages, not all though.... Icab crashes and seems to be bloated.... and Netscape...forget it.... Thanks!!!

To be honest, 9.1 is too much for an old Mac like that. The maximum RAM that machine can handle is about 64 MB, and at 75 MHz along with a slow hard drive the experience you're going to have is an unpleasantly slow one.

With those Macs, the best Mac OS to run on them would be 7.6.1. Lots of older apps still support 7.6.1 such as the iCab web browser. You could go for 8.1, but the newer interface and extra features might slow it down as well.

When I used to live with my parents, I used to have a Power Macintosh Performa 6220CD which was basically the same thing as the PM 6200 except that mine had a TV tuner card built-in. It had a 75 MHz PPC603 processor and I maxxed it out to 64 MB of RAM. It was snappy under System 7.5.5, but was noticably slower under 8.1 though still usable. After installing 9.1 on it, startups were super slow as well as general OS tasks. So I would recommend 7.6.1, which is what I'll probably install on that 6220CD that my parents still have at their house.

While you could upgrade the hard drive, remember that the controller is old and might not support faster speeds or storage capacities. More information can be found at this link from Low End Mac:

your best bet is more ram but the 6200 really is not that gret a computer if you can afford you should upgrade your self to something better like a 7500 or a 7600

if not max out your ram

there is not a whole lot of choice for webbrowsers on 9 any more only icab is stil being devloped

stick with IE 5 and an older mozilla

or maybe you wil find a browser to your liking here http://www.pure-mac.com/

there is stil always wannabe

I have one of these Road Macs... Since I run OS 7.6 on another Mac (Quadra 605), I decided that I should be more "well rounded" by running OS 8.1. You are right that it slows down a bit (especially with the 64MB RAM), but still, it does its job.

One thing though... I have one of each, an LC NIC, and LC modem. LC being that it's a right angle Nubus card. My Quadra takes precedence in my mind, so it got the NIC, which leaves the modem card for the 6200. Good thing I've still got dial-up access too.

This Mac isn't really all to famous with me, although it has a nice footprint, and does its job when playing some Appletalk networked games with friends.

I also suggest iCab, although I don't use 3.0.3 (because it costs the monies), but if all you need is text based browsing, wannabe is much more stable and useful than Lynx or MacWeb. I do not suggest IE or Netscape (any version of either), they take too much resource, and those which don't have no good compatibility with the current state of the web.

Good luck, and have fun!
