• Updated 2023-07-12: Hello, Guest! Welcome back, and be sure to check out this follow-up post about our outage a week or so ago.

Performa 6200 does not want to boot (6360 in fact!!)

Yep definitely sounds like the HD is causing the trouble. The 6360 uses a standard IDE hard drive so replacing it will be easy enough. Any old IDE PC hard drive will do the trick.

Watch out as there is both an IDE and a SCSI interface in the 6xxx series machines. The CD ROM uses SCSI whilst the hard drive uses IDE so be careful which one plugs in where.

The way it is installed internally, it is difficult to make that mistake: the CD slots in to a special connector with adaptors, while the HD is installed directly with the ribbon cable not he front of the computer.

But still, I'm not sure the HD is the only problem, as if I unplug it, I can still get the black screen. I'll let the computer off for a while and see if that clear something in PRAM, then I will be able to see if another HD will do the trick.

Humm, still having problems here with this! Sometimes it starts, sometimes it does not. I change the HD for a 20 Gig one.

I put back the memory sticks, and it booted once with the memory in. So maybe the memory is not bad, but not sure. That time, when it happen, I booted up with the OS 8.0 CD and started installing on a partition on the HD. In about 1/3rd of the process, it froze. When I tried booting it again, black screen...

But that one time, when it was OK, I reseted the PRAM with the keyboard. I heard the starting chime a few times (2-3) before I let it continue. Then I realized that all other times when I tried reset the PRAM, it was not doing the chime more than once, when power comes on.

I hope that someone could be able to give me some other research point to continue investigating this issue...

Thanks to all!

Last report:

I succeeded again to startup the computer and wanted to install OS 8 on it. While doing so, the installer told me at one point that my HD had problems, data could be lost, and blah blah blah.

At that point I fire up Drive Setup and the HD was not seen by the application. Bad sign!

So I'm wandering if the problem do no lie in the IDE controller at all. all other component have responded well so far, except this one.

Since I do not know anyway to disable the IDE controller, I cannot be sure. If anyone have a way to do, as on a PC, a "BIOS" removal of that component, I'll be very happy to try it! ;)

Thanks again.
