Oops, I just got myself a Quad G5

For a few months I was eyeing a working G5 Quad including a 23" Cinema HD Display with DVI Adapter that was offered for pickup at a price of 50 Euros!

I always shied away from the Quads due to their water cooling issues, but at that price I could hardly say no. Only it was about 9 hrs drive from my place, so I had to wait if it would be still available when I came to the area for another reason. Well, long story short, it was and I got it. Lucky me!

I still have to figure out which variant of the cooling system it has - can this be determined from the outside via model no. or something else?

Is there a good guide that shows what has to be done to "future-proof" the cooling system? I found lots of information here in the forums and elsewhere. It is so much that I cannot really figure out how to continue. I'd be thankful for a good pointer!

Happy me is happy - Both are beauties, although the Display will be a better fit form my G4 MDD.

I have a liquid-cooled Dual 2.5 model that I bought a couple years ago, at a nearby yard sale of all places. I’ve read through various guides I could find, both here and on the internet, and servicing the cooling system looks like quite a long and complex undertaking.

I have zero liquid cooling experience in general, and I doubt working with the G5 is a good place to start. I really would prefer to have an expert working with me, instead of trying to tackle it alone with just an online guide to follow.

As far as I can tell, there are no signs of leakage with mine, though the liquid sloshing anround in there makes it sound rather empty to me. I’ve never dared to even try to boot it up, and would rather have an expert look it over to confirm my assessment before I take that risk.

I’ve read that Dual G5s like mine can be retrofit to air cooling, so I guess that’s always an option. The Quads, though, run way too hot and require liquid cooling, at least as far as I’ve seen.

There is a forum post about someone who serviced their Quad G5 cooling system, and it goes into great detail. You should probably post there as well, and see what advice they can provide.

Even if the tower turns out to be a total loss, at least you still got a monitor for your trouble.

I have air cooled two dual 2.7 and one dual 2.5 g5. All had leaky coolers. My quad is clean and no issues with original water cooling system. The panasonic lcs systems were the best on dual models. Dephi were the nasty ones

Sadly, Panasonic's LCS is not going to fit the quad, however I did read a few years back that the single pump is the more reliable version and the dual pump for some, unknown reason comes up as being less reliable. Mile will vary with this though. I have a G5 Quad and it runs good, though I am getting memory issues now - possibly the solder is coming loose and not all chips are being read ?

Great, this was the post I was looking for. I saw it months ago and did not find it yesterday! I'm NOT looking forward to redoing the LCS but what has to be done, has to be done. Luckily I'm not afraid of taking things apart and am usually able to get them together again - So there's that at least

Which reminds me, I may check out my G5 Quad to make sure it still works. I would rather pay someone to fix the LCS, as I am not that inclined to take it apart myself, plus I would be concerned I couldn't get back together. I can take apart a Titanium and Aluminum PowerBook and most G4 macs, but the Quad ? ehh... rather not, anyone know of someone who can fix do this for a fee ?
