Not sure if these qualify, my entries from 1997

Well, this challenge idea sounds fun, but I would most likely have to use something fairly old (like my Quadra 950) to make it really a challenge though.

In my computing environment 1997 was a landmark year for hardware for me. Four of my main systems were released in that year and all are pretty much daily use systems. Here is a quick run down of them...

As for what I use them for... pretty much anything you can think of. 3D modeling and animation, graphic design and illustration, web design, video capture and editing, and most likely a ton of other things I can't think of off hand.

My 8600 running Mac OS 8.6 is almost totally dedicated to video these days. I have been capturing rare video tape movies that never made it to DVDs, and when it isn't capturing, it is used as my main TV (I have cable TV running into it via the VCR). Because of this, I don't keep as many apps on it as space is important for video capturing.

My 3400c is my catch all system... there is almost no type of software I don't have on that system, so it makes a great training system. In addition to tons of software titles, I also have tons of PDF manuals and tutorials for most of those apps. At one point it was also my primary school system, but about a year ago I got a PowerBook G3 Lombard which now serves in that capacity.

I'm guessing that this might not qualify for the challenge though as it should be pretty obvious that working within these limitations is hardly limiting (or challenging) for me. But, if they do qualify that would be great!

While they're not as retro as some, I'm impressed by your setup purely because all of those machines are the ones you use on a regular basis.

The other thing i noticed is that you're actually using OS X Server 1.2 apps on a regular basis, which I find impresive too. (You even linked to a machine running OpenStep on SPARC in another thread, if I remember correctly.)

It may not be fully "retro" as per the definition of the challenge yet, but I'd say in a few years it'll count, and right now, it's definitely pretty awesome.

Yeah, the thing that makes any OS useful is having useful applications, and I've been lucky enough to put together a good solid collection of apps that let me be quite productive within Rhapsody.

Sadly these apps are getting more and more rare as time goes on. Developers who were willing to sell me apps a few years ago can no longer create activation codes for their software. This forces everyone else to use either the freeware apps or non-free apps in demo mode within Rhapsody.

I even tried to buy an extra license of OmniWeb a couple years ago (because I hated having to close out of OmniWeb on one system before starting it on another (my 8600 and ThinkPad are both running Rhapsody and can see each other over the network), but the Omni Group wasn't able to sell me the additional license.

Or in the case of TIFFany3, I wasn't able to give that one away for free because the developer had signed an agreement with Apple not to distribute it after Apple bought it. That is why I can provide TIFFany II for NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, but not TIFFany3 for OPENSTEP/Rhapsody/Mac OS X.
