newer G3

my 6100 has a newer G3 210 mhz card

its working fine and themachine is not so much a early ppc powermac any more as a first gen imac with a 4 gig hd 72 mb ram and a 2 speed scsi internal cd writer

so far everything is fine

wat i want to know is does the newer tech allow to be used as a pass through for a video card

it seems to be there is a slot on top but what card can i use exactly ?

and i assume i need to look for a pds card not a nubus card

I have a newertech g3 card in my 7100/66 (runs at 248Mhz on that machine and has the 1MB cache), it has the pass-through cable going to a PDS video card (upside down on a bracket that sits on a Nubus slot). I have not looked to see if the passthrough is on a socket or a permanent part of the card. I think the pass-through is hard to find by itself. The 7100 has 3 Nubus slots and the PDS adapter needs the middle one. The 6100 is probably different since its only expansion is at an angle.

The G3 card in the 6100 has a PDS pass-through in the same location as the standard PDS right angle adapter. Any x100 PDS video card (HPV, AV) will work in the slot.

You need the Nubus Powermac angle adapter to use a video card or DOS card in those machines. The L2 slot upgrade should have a passthrough slot to replicate the slot on the adapter.

Um, there is no L2 slot upgrade for the 6100, 7100, or 8100.

You also don't need the angle adapter for the 6100 because the G3 serves as such. PDS cards just plug right in.

NuBus cards will not work with the G3 in a 6100, of course.

You know what I meant. :p

Yeah, you're right, I do now. I apologize. I was tired last night when I read this, and I thought you were saying he needed the right angle NuBus adapter in addition to the G3 upgrade.

Peace,

Drew

You need the Nubus Powermac angle adapter to use a video card or DOS card in those machines. The L2 slot upgrade should have a passthrough slot to replicate the slot on the adapter.
1. The 6100 Nubus adapter is for Nubus cards, of whatever kind.

2. The 6100 DOS card adapter is for 6100 DOS cards. It will also mount a 610 DOS card.

3. The 6100 PDS angle adapter is for AV and HPV x100 PDS video cards.

4. None of the above are the same.

5. Some G3 PDS upgrades will function as a PDS angle adapter.

5. There is no upgrade for the L2 cache slot, and if you have a G3 upgrade, you should remove any cache in the L2 slot.

Are you sure you have a Newertech G3 upgrade, and not a Sonnet? Sonnet was the only maker I was aware of that made G3 upgrades where the G3 upgrade was on the card that acted as a 90-degree PDS adapter. If you in fact have the Sonnet, you can put either the Apple HPV or the AV cards in it and they will work. Cables get a bit tight, and the 6100's lid might not want to snap fully closed, but it will work. Incidentally, Sonnet went out of their way to publish a web page disclaiming any responsibility for the HPV card actually working in their 90-degree adapting G3 upgrades in the 6100, although I never had any trouble with it.

The NewerTech upgrades I knew of sat vertically in the PDS slot, then had a pass-through bridge cable and bracket to mount either the HPV or AV card upside-down in one of the Nubus bays of the 7100 and 8100.

I suspect you have the Sonnet G3 upgrade and not the Newertech. (Does it have a purple heatsink?)

I think what everyone is referring to, but unable to describe, is the metal angle frame bracket. The G3 accelerator replaces the right angle circuit board PDS adaptor, but it still needs a frame to hold the card in place.

You can use the one that came with a DOS card if you remove one stud on the horizontal plane that will hit the AV/HPV PDS card you'll be using for video.

Newertech also made G3 upgrades that could also function as a PDS adaptor.

If the card has the brown board lacquer used by Newer Technology at the time, a black label on the reverse with Model: MAXpowr/MXP6100/Newer Technology, Inc. on it, a white label on the same side with DT372/I2040/160, and a 180-pin angle connector above the heatsink on the component side, the evidence that it is a NewerTech angle PDS G3 card is strong.

Newer made two. There was only one Sonnet form factor that fit the 6100/7100/8100. Newer had a small form factor (just like the Sonnet's) for 6100s, and a larger one for the 7100/8100
