MODE32 on SE/30 with 4 Mb RAM

Hi all

I recently purchased 4x16 mb SIMMs for my SE/30 on ebay and now is waiting while it ships to me.

I have a System 7.1 on my Mac and I want to prepare it for future memory upgrade. At current moment my SE/30 has 4 mb of RAM and I tried to install Mode32 1.2. After restart I see sad mac, so Mode32 is not working onto my system.

Will it work after memory upgrade or Mode32 is not compatible with my SE/30?

thanks.

That is in interesting situation.  It should be that Mode32 should work regardless of the ram amount, and is certainly usable on your SE/30.  Not sure if it is the wrong version or if there is something wrong with your hardware, however.

in the hack area this was just discussed.  Some ram speeds or types are not working 100% with mode 32.  Go to that thread as bigmessowires put together a good post about it.

If you are sticking with System 7.1, then I recommend the Apple 32-bit Enabler.  This one doesn't care about RAM speed.  You only need MODE32 if you're going to upgrading to System 7.5, otherwise save yourself the headache and stick with the Apple enabler.

If you haven't already, you should use System 7.1.1 Pro.  It has nearly everything 7.5 does, and won't required MODE32.

They were using MODE32 1.2 which is not supported with System 7.5 and is probably not particularly good even with System 7.1.  I think MODE32 7.5 is overall probably the best solution nowadays.

Really?  It is true it sometimes reconfigures the memory controller, but...

There're a couple of threads on here already regarding all the woes experienced with MODE32 and mixed speed RAM.  This is just my experience, and obviously not official or anything.

So yesterday I finally got 4x16 Mb SIMMS.

I tried next configurations:

Bank A - 4x16, Bank B - empty : simasimac

Bank A - 4x1, Bank B - 4x16 : works, but I can't install motherboard in chassis rails. 16 mb SIMMs is slightly tall

Bank A - 4x16, Bank B - 4x1 : works and fits perfectly

System 7.1 shows 68 mb, but 65 mb used by OS - typical situation without 32-bit enhancer.

Trying to use Mode32 7.1 - bus error on mac startup.

Trying to use Apple 32-bit Extender - system freezes after happy mac icon.

Motherboard is recapped. So I think that it is a software problem. Should I try to use OS 7.5.3?

I just went back and read my own thread regarding this exact issue.  I never got a stock SE/30 to work with 16MB SIMMs.  It always froze with the enabler.  The only way I got an SE/30 to work with 16MB SIMMs was by installing a 32-bit clean ROM.

I think you're going to need to either source a IIsi, IIci, or IIfx ROM, or, buy yourself a ROM-inator II flashed with a 32-bit clean ROM.

Hello Megabyte,

I am also trying to find the Radius drivers. Can you send me a copy on a floppy disk? I will send you the cost and postage any way you choose. My email address is thelpope1@gmail.com. Thanks.
