is it still a conquest if it was from a family member?

Uncle upgraded to an intel mini a few years back and had his old G4 mini laying around still. optical drive didn't work, took it to the apple store and the repair cost wasn't worth it(he was already complaining about how slow it was)

So, he asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted it, finally had a chance to get it last night. Of course he forgot the power cable so I'll get that next week. in the meantime I yanked his HDD and put it in an external case to give back to him when I get the power supply.(he does lots of stock trading online etc so I'd just as soon not have any of his data around) put in another 80GB drive I had in that case, upgraded the stock 256MB DIMM to a 1GB(maxed) I also used compressed air to clean it all up.

This morning I used the Powersupply we have for a mini at work to install OS 10.5 server on it. compressed air seems to have fixed the optical drive. (guess the local apple store geniuses didn't think of that one :p ) works great! All set to replace the stupid LaCie d2 network network drive I have(AFP is not compatible with 10.7+ and LaCie is not going to update the firmware... ) going to do that tonight. YAY!

Not bad. :) And yeah - if it needed repair, and was most likely going to get chucked, yeah, I'd definitely call that a conquest.

Very cool, especially the part about giving the HDD back to your uncle all set up in an external case, that's a very nice touch.

Great conquest. :approve:

and now there is no video.... :/ was working, as I set up stuff on the home network (did the install at work not connected to the network, obviously had to wait until I had it home to finish... OS X server is picky.) was going along fine, than weird color bands started appearing, it flickered and bunch than went blank monitor is fine, using it with the '09 intel mini right now.

unfortunately, while the mini shows up on the network and screen sharing is enabled, it won't connect :( so the machine is working still...

got 10.5 server admin installed on the old G4 powerbook (good thing that's still around) 10.6 server admin, which can control a 10.5 server refused to install on 10.8 or 10.7 :(

shot off the firewall, now screen sharing works. need to work on that, thinking of using this as a router too, with a USB to Ethernet adaptor... cut down on the amount of gear running. maybe. we'll see how it does as a server for now.

Good conquest! Owning Mini never hurts! It has so great design, small and still it's powerfull enough.

I am looking also my first mini also. G4's are still pretty expensive.

tis morning I found out at 11PM last night it locked up while trying to copy 500GB of data to the new share point...

and yeah minis rock, I have an intel mini as our home computer. We're using a 2011 version at work for file serving and filemaker server.

side note, working on the server now from work. love VPN and screen sharing :)

bonus for money savings.... I wanted a laser printer in the basement, easier to print out vintage stereo manuals(my other hobby is fixing old audio gear) and ebay shipping labels(how I pay for my hobbies heh). so I got an HP 1200 free from craigslist, and was looking into print servers since it was a non-network model... no need now! set up 10.5's print server plugged the printer, clicked a couple boxes and boom network printer in the basement!

Bonus, 10.5 still has appletalk so I have appletalk printing on so I should be able to print from the PB180(can't print to the modern HP laser upstairs, no appletalk :( ) Also means I can store all my 68k software on the new server too and access it on the 180, help make up for the dinky HDD in it.

having far too much fun with this  Glad there's a group of people I can share the fun I'm having with.

BAH! locked up while updating the OS. I've either got a HDD or RAM issue I think :(

computer was still responding though, could log out of screen sharing and back in this time (last night's lockup really locked it up) this time the progress bar was just stuck for over an hour in the same spot.

oh, now it says 'reconnecting' maybe it finished and is restarting? hummm.

nope, dead. have to wait till I get home. have to see if I have another HDD kicking around to try, since I don't have another 1GB stick of RAM, can't imagine 10.5 server would like me putting the 256mb one back :p

Could be an overheating issue. The screen artifacts you got in one instance suggests that. Check that the fan is working properly and possibly replace any heat sink grease between the CPU and the heat sink (can't remember arrangement in G4 Mini, but I assume there's a heat sink on the CPU).

I think I figured out the screen issue, apparently the G4 mini doesn't like some kinds of high res screens or something or other. Problem appeared on a newer 1920x1080 22" monitor, I have it hooked up to an older 1280x1024" 15" LCD and it seems to be fine now. :?:

fan isn't running very fast maybe that's an issue? I feel warm air coming out the back.

no temp probes inside (weird) only get HDD temperature, it's at 43C

xServe G4 has lots of them :) That was last machine I ran 10.5 server on(work).

using the separate downloaded combo update for the server so I can monitor what's going on sitting at 44C, some times shows 45C, but not for long. with 68% processor average. maybe it was just the software update version had an issue? so far so good (tried it again through software update and it locked up at the same point)

end of the install, processor and memory are being worked hard. fan must have picked up drive temp is at 42C

now 41C

went downstairs, the fan has sped up for sure. so the variable speed is working, does not seem to be running full blast even being pushed.

now 40C!

getting there :) once the data is all transferred and everything is running and stable I'll get it all neat and tidy and the LaCie drive will go away.

little more cleaned up now, I'll have to get a picture soon. in any case I've gotten a second real lock up, I only saw the log the last time(no monitor) this time with the monitor hooked up I saw it was a kernel panic. both times it pointed to IOATA. I guess that 80gig I put in is on its way out than? *great*

so, I use externals for all the data this machine uses, internal is just a boot drive with 11GB on it good candidate for a CompactFlash drive set up? Relatively speedy 16GB card? (sandisk 30MB/s should outdo the old 80GB 4200RPM that's in there, thing has to be 6+ years old)
