Mac OS 8.1 on SE/30, and RaSCSI Daynaport

I put 8.1 on my SE/30, which runs fairly well! However, I haven't been able to install the drivers for my RaSCSI's Daynaport emulation. It says the folder "Network" cannot be modified by the installer, and the Garden page for the drivers only mentions it being compatible with System 6/7. I'm assuming I'm out of luck, but just to check - has anyone gotten the Daynaport drivers working on OS 8?

As a side note - is it even worth my time getting OS 8 set up on an SE/30? The biggest thing I like about it so far is that I can copy files in Finder while doing other things, and I haven't noticed it being *too* slow, but I was curious if others feel like 7.5 is a better choice for the SE/30. Thanks!

I wouldn't install Mac OS 8 on an SE/30 personally, but if you want background copying, you could install Speed Doubler :

It is one Speed Doubler's features. Turn off the stuff you don't want in the control panel.

Oh nice, thank you! That was the main appeal of OS 8 from my quick interaction with it (aside from the feeling of "doing something that shouldn't work, but does"), so that'll be great!

8.1 is incredible stable on a se/30. Much more stable than 7.5.x. 7.1 is the next in stability.

as for the Daynaport issue, why not install the drivers in a emulator/another machine and move them over?

Also are you sure your system folder isn’t protected? Or the network folder?

I could try that - I already have them installed on my 7.5 drive, so I'd just need to find the correct files and copy them over I guess? I'm not sure if Mac OS drivers typically just place new files, or modifies system files, or does some other "hidden" things that wouldn't be visible in Finder.

Also are you sure your system folder isn’t protected? Or the network folder?
It might be - was that new in OS 8? I'll have to check that, thanks.

Do the Dayna drivers not like Open Transport?
Nope, they work great with OT! That's what I'm using on 7.5.

I found the problem with the DaynaPort drivers - I think it was trying to update AppleTalk or some other system software, and that's what was blocking it. I used a custom installation and only installed the driver for the device I'm emulating, and that worked without any issues.

That said, Speed Doubler seems great, and I'm starting to notice how slow 8.1 is on my SE/30, so I'll probably stick with 7.5 on there. Thanks all!

You'll need a good amount of RAM to use Mac OS 8.1 on Mac SE/30. Mine as 64 MBs. I think 32 MB should suffice.
